The meaning of swimming

(I somehow lost my post in the middle of reviewing it--sorry if this ends up posted twice! Now let's see if I can remember what I wrote.) I was talking with a friend about swimming and she said she started "swimming for life" x number of years ago. I got the sense that she meant that it was more than a good workout--it kept her "alive." I have to admit that it has that kind of effect for me, too. At the risk of sounding too new-agey, it's nourishing in more than a physical sense. What does swimming mean to you? How does that compare to other sports or activities you do? How does that meaning influence your goals and performance?

Ummm...other than the fact that you swim breaststroke all the time and absolutely love it, and have conceded that I'm pretty much the most amazing person you've ever met....then no. Jim, maybe your memory is faltering???

Kyra, you are rather amazing and breaststroke is awesome. I'm taking out Jessica Hardy, Tara Kirk, Amanda Beard, Megan Jendrick, etc. at Olympic Trials and setting the world record in both the 100 and 200 just for kicks! And back to reality we go ... Kyra, I did have a run in with some fabulous UT men so ... it might be a toss up ;) You hit on UT boys without me!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm crushed.

Heather, you're telling me you don't recall all those insane conversations we used to have then?.....you know (What if we all had superpowers ...what would they be and how would you use them?...hmmm....you had no idea what I was talking about in that posting then?).....Not that we ever went too overboard...but you used to post some pretty "out there" kind of thread topics almost daily...and I must say I had a total blast back then hangin out with you guys....As kyra says "You know all the fun we used to have together"....How do you think it makes me feel when you say stuff like...."My memory is failing...lets see how's the 200 fly training?"....I'm sorry if I'm a little freaked out by that....And you don't recall how I know what you look like? Thats just a little off the cuff for me right now I guess??...Hey but I'm cool with our new relationship now as long as you are.....I can adapt to most anything I suppose? newmastersswimmer

Well how the heck did you think I would react after dropping such a bomb on me out of no where? You just admitted that you never loved butterfly and always loved breaststroke....I remember that you were always into playing games (and playful little headgames) but I am a little freaked out...I meant absolutely no harm by my posting.....I wasn't really trying to out you or anything? hey we can keep our old friendship a secret or whatever....it would just be nice if you and Kyra could keep me a little in the loop every once in a while thats all....No harm no foul o.k. head cheerleader...LOL!! newmastersswimmer
  • Lovely Fortress!! But I still don't understand the disdain toward breaststroke. It's really not that bad!!! Apparently only the truly gifted are blessed with being able to swim this most elegant of strokes. :joker: Kyra: "Disdain" is not the right word. I'm sure it's just misguided jealously. You must remember that some of my best friends are breaststrokers and my daughter is a breaststroker. I myself do not have the technical finesse to do justice to the stroke. (Although I do contend that fly is equally elegant when done properly. Probably both are equally ugly when done improperly.) So, like many others, I just make fun of breaststroke instead. I am also on the backstroke side of the "impossible to do both breaststroke and backstroke" conundrum. So I'm always very busy defending fly and back -- usually from breaststrokers. Plus, my team is full of a bunch of non-breaststrokers. All we can do is :joker: to cover our deficiencies. But I will say that butterfrog is not my favorite. Maybe Allen can make it look elegant, but I haven't seen elegant yet myself. Butterfrog is just ugly disguised breaststroke. It should be a different stroke altogether! Now I will await inspiration to hit to pick on distance freestylers. :dedhorse: Jim-Bo: I penned it off and on while I was watching Desperate Housewives last night. Apparently, trash TV and Shakespeare go together. Limericks are good. I would appreciate some chiming in if the cavalry really starts stampeding.

Wow that was a great epic sized poem Fort! How long did that one take? I'm only good for a few lines in a limerick here and there I'm afraid...You will have to wage the larger ground battles I suppose ...LOL!! Newmastersswimmer
  • Bravo, everyone! It is so nice to see our little thread alive again. Maybe some of the newbies will read all the classics on this thread. Newbies can go back and start around page 4 or 5 to read the birth of our creative genius(hahaha).... Rhyme on, everyone! Must start work on a new Ode.... Swimmy :)
  • It would be hard to improve on classics like Ode to the Locker Room Floor or Swim Rage...A Horror Story. I will try.... Swimmy :)
