"unqualifications"
Adding the prefix "un" and the suffix "tion" to root words is grammatically correct although it may not be in the dictionary.
If you "google" the word, you will find many citations--e.g., government documents, political discourse. It sounds awkward to my ear, but I don't think it is wrong.
I enjoy the SWIMMING discussion about training age and potential.
One friend who has been swimming all his life could not believe I was going to do a 400 IM. He looked at me in disbelief and said, "Can you do it?". I said "sure", and he stayed and watched and said I impressed the heck out of him for stepping up there and doing that, especially as sick as I was. Course what are friends for, right!
Candance, it will be fun to be in a battle for last place. Go lane 8!!

This bickering between you and Swamp Thing, er. . . Aquageek. . . is pretty entertaining but I'm afraid I'll have to insist that you stop insulting the South and those that live here. While I was born in the Bay Area, my wife is a native of North Carolina.
Cinc, we posted at the same time, and you are right, I started this for a low impact form of exercise because my high weight was starting to really wear on me when doing impact exercise. Now that I no longer weigh 180, I can do the impact, but prefer the pool!
Dorothy.....lane 8, lane 1......I'm happy just to get there :-) as non-impressive as my seed time may be!!!!!! Raised in a home with 6 older brothers who never competed national anything :-)
Cheers!

Yes, you can use "IGNORE" for just one person. I'd suggest it.
I.B. had been the only one on my IGNORE list for a long time.
I think you go back and do it by editing your profile.
Here's a catch...if you sign on as a guest then, nothing gets blocked, of course...they don't know who is who. Then of course, a lot of people who just want to glance fast do log on as guests because it is faster and convenient. And that is about 75% of the total population (who also tune in for laughs!)

Not that.
Some hero you mentioned was an age-group swimmer not a late bloomer like you and me (which is in a different ballpark), has more time for swimming and traveling to meets than I do because of not being employed full-time, trains in US Swimming -not USMS- and trains less than me.
In contrast, I am professionally employed in a field where they bring me in because there are no qualified U.S. people to do the work.
It is a competitive and full-time consuming professional field, allowing me -only after business hours- to train and race in San Diego and to travel to race at the Nationals.
Sorry Ion, I really don't give much attention to this late bloomer thing, even if I am one. I'll give it my best, and whatever my best ends up being, I'll have the satisfaction that I have given it my best. I don't need any more than that. I'm doing this for me, and for social reasons, not for grandstanding and external recognition. If I get noticed, which I doubt that I will, that's just a bonus.
Also, I ran your VOMax theory about blood vessel development by my Aunt, who is an internal medicine and sports and rehabilitation medicine MD, and she says it doesn't exactly hold water. I'm really not up for getting into details, since I'm really not nearly as invested in your theories, proving them or disproving them, as you are. And I don't mean that as a put down, I really don't have a lot of interest in that. Bulk of my time is invested in other, more tangeable swim-related things.
If you want to run your theories by a very knowledgeable MD that is also very interested in swimming, I suggest you pay a visit to the rec.sport.swimming. There is a Southern California MD posting there, with whom you should be able to get into a very informative discussion.
As for your employment, I'm also an engineer, but I'm not 'professionally employed' like you... I used to be. I'm couple of steps up, I own a Professional Engineering company. My business hours are around the clock.
Have you seen the new Ian Thorpe Beneath the suit DVD yet? I just got it, haven't gotten around to watching it yet.
