I was talking to an old high school classmate of mine who was on the swim team. He said that the coach liked to work the team so hard during practice that somebody would end up puking. This story is probably hyperbole, but I wonder -- what is the physiological mechanism that results in nausea, light-headedness and cold sweats when one over-exerts oneself in this way??

I ran track in high school and college (800 meters mostly) and it was fairly common for us to vomit during practice. The workout that did it most was repeat 400 meters hard with little rest.
Twice (both national championships) during my racewalking career I had to be revived by paramedics as I passed out and went into convulsions right after crossing the finish line.
I've also noticed that in swimming long distances, I get an occasional gastric reflux-type occurance which isn't quite vomiting, but is very unpleasant to have to swallow.

I puked from swimming once: My 100 split in a 200 was faster than my PR. The last 3 laps were hell. I seriously thought I was going to die right before I puked. Then I felt better - immediately. Because I was in High School I thought it was cool.
