Man, this week I did two hour long sessions of deep water running. at first I thought I would look like a dumba$$ out there...but after 20 minutes I knew I was getting an awesome workout!
These two simulated runs have been butt kickers! Sure, you make as most out of it as you want...
It sure did make me appreciate water aerobics (or at least those who are really working it!)
*Shaky--don't you dare say that I've gone to the dark side.

How similar is it to vertical kicking?
I used to do 3 - 20 min sets of vertical kicking with 5 min ez in between. They would kick my bum... and a lot of other muscles.
Shakey,
We've chatted about this; good luck with Wharton. And, yes, you will find the aquatic facilities available to the students at most major universities are nirvana compared to a typical Y. (Plus, the other swimmers there are MUCH better looking than the usual Y crowd . You might even find that you don't really mind the water aerobes so much...)
Matt
Have to agree with Matt S. I swim at a Y now - although none of my experiences have been as bad as some that Shakey posted. But when I was at Penn State, I swam for exercise for a semester and the pools were awesome. And yes, the others in the pool were much faster and in much better shape than at the Y. More "distractions" at the pool.:D
Unfortunately, I was too lazy at the age of 20 to keep up with swimming (or any exercise for that matter). I tried off and on a couple of more times before getting into it full blown about a year and a half ago (at the age of 33). I do about a 1:20 100 SCY now. I often wonder if I had started at 20 and kept it up to now.... Oh well, nice to dream.
