Fastest "Masters" Club Ever!

Call me an old fashioned cynic, but Gary Hall's oh so exclusive "Race Club" seems to generate more amusement than intimidation. To review the bidding for those with real lives, Mr. Hall announced a few months ago his intent to form his own club dedicated to elite swimming. It has a fabulous location and training facility in the Florida Keys. It will cover travel, training and living expenses. (I'm tempted to ask who is fronting the money, but I won't denigrade Mr. Hall's ability to raise funds.) If you want to join them, send in a resume; don't call us; we'll call you. Let us look over your accoplishments and decide whether you are worthy. Hmm, great facilities, don't have to share pool time with the non-world class members (i.e. 99%) of a Swim Club, just about all expenses paid. Unless you have your own lucrative endorsement deal, what swimmer wouldn't want to join this team? Well, the initial members of the "Swim Club" were announced last week. www.swiminfo.com/.../6097.asp Eight Olympians sounds real impressive. But then you look at the list a little more closely. Eleven swimmers, and although I have not googled everyone of them, all of the ones I have googled are in their late 20's or older. Or in other words, 3 of the 11 swimmers are chronologically at the back end of their careers, and they have not yet made their nation's Olympic Team. Closer scrutiny reveals 10 of the 11 are men. Just about all of them swim the 50 free or 50 fly, and few of them seriously compete in anything other that the 50 or 100 free or fly. In contrast to the lack of age, gender and event diversity, the team does have members of many nationalities and ethic backgrounds. However, the most telling stat of all is that roughly half of the members I checked are not currently ranked in the World Top 20 Rankings, LCM or SCM, in any event. Overall, the "Swim Club" sort of reminds me of the kind of team a rookie fantasy league coach would assemble--there are a lot of names you would recognize, but their most productive years may be behind them. To be fair, all of these folks are amazing, world-class swimmers. Their careers to date have been awesome, and they remain extraordinary today by any standard, except arguably World Rankings. In contrast, I am an opinionated loud mouth. I would be delighted to see them find new speed and light up the scoreboards next year with medals and records, and make a complete monkey of me. As of right now, I think may the "Swim Club's" gloss may have exceeded its actual capabilities. Matt

maybe they'll do distance next yr.... I would prefer that their statements about their goals (all swimmers every stroke and distance) would match up with what they are actually pursuing (mostly older, male sprinters) .............................. is it safe to say they are working on the situation?... www.theraceclub.net/.../ChadCarvin.php - 400, 800, 1500 animal... www.theraceclub.net/.../Mirna Jukic.php - 17 year old 200 breastroker. www.fina.org/bio_Jukic.html also, from the race clubs front page on their site: it looks as if though Canada's olympian Nadine Rolland has now joined the growing number of lady race clubbers...Therese Alshammar signed on about a month ago

This is NOT a shot at The Race Club!!! Thermador--did you provide that link to Carvin (on the TRC site, no less) b/c you reeeealy like him? That may not be the best choice of athletes to convince us that they are branching above 100's; what with Chad wearing his Mission Viejo sweats, cap and suit in those photos!!! See if Bill Rose has actually "let" Chad leave MVN first. Alshammer is a huge pick-up, though.

one of the things i really think is cool about the race club is you dont leave your club team. like many of the other swimmers they continue to be a part of their local club teams. See if Bill Rose has actually "let" Chad leave MVN first as a matter of fact i reaaaaally do like chad... met him once when i was at a meet in Tucson back in the day. he is a prime example of a man who truly works like an animal. and i think since he walked away from Nat'ls with gold it shows hes still on top of his game

"Distance" being defined as anything over a 50? :p Before people start going nuts again, let me repeat, I think that what they are doing is tremendous, even if none of their swimmers ever do anything in any race over 50 meters. Because I have an aversion to overblown rhetoric, I would prefer that their statements about their goals (all swimmers every stroke and distance) would match up with what they are actually pursuing (mostly older, male sprinters). But hey, who is to say they will not bring in more swimmers and branch out into the IM's or middle distance races once they get this thing up and running? I'll be very interested in following their progress. Matt

I saw Chad swim the mile at the Kerr McGee Pro Am in Ok City a few years ago...TRUST ME...he is an animal....He has the coolest looking flip turn where both legs do not go over the top together....they come down to hit the wall split seconds apart....He went low, low 15 in the 1650...Impressive dist guy!

dunno what to say bert. actually i just dont have the motivation, im not a spokesperson for trc... you have every right to your opinions and views... just dont know why so suspicious of an organization tryin to help the sport. maybe you could ask someone who is involved with the club what the deal is. they have a message board...

Just out of curiousity -- is TRC actually registered as a club by USS (or, for that matter, USMS)? Their website doesn't seem vey clear on that point (unless I'm missing something). If they're not, that would explain how a swimmer like Carvin can affiliate with them and still be a member of his home club. Of course, it could also mean that TRC is more of a marketing operation than a team.

Then, if Carvin has not left MVN (likely for the training benefits of swimming there), what is/was the purpose of the photos on the TRC site? I mean, who is getting what from that? He isn't representing them, so where does the benefit derive? PR? "I'm going to wear my Mission gear, but yeah, you can put images of me on your site with some snappy comments below each; It'll be good for your club b/c I'm an Olympian who you guys can say you know..." Don't think Gary and Roland need that type of PR. They can stand alone with their accomplishments.

What a bunch of cry babies, Hall Jr finally has a club for the post college age sprint swimmer and all I hear sour grapes. Yes, a few swimmers have sponsorship deals but most don't. Not even world class swimmers. If I like a "Pro Team" baseball, football, basketball, soccer I buy the ball cap, shirt, baseball cards, coffee mugs, signed posters... why is this so wrong for swimming? If swimming is to continue(the NCAA is trying kill) then we must work together. Maybe someone else has the will to start a IM or distance club if they think The Race Club isn't for them.
