The finals of the first day, show:
.) in the men 400 meter free final, Thorpe (Aus.) went 3:42.58 for #1, Hackett (Aus.) went 3:45.17 for #2, and Coman (Rom.) went 3:46.8x for #3;
Coman -who is my fellow countryman, and I was telling you about him for years-, defeated Rossolini (Ita.) of the 2000 Olympics fame, Keller (U.S.) and Carvin (U.S.);
.) in the women 400 meter free final, Simona Paduraru (Rom.) finished #7, with a fast time;
.) in the 4x100 men free relay, Russia won;
the fastest split was by Frenchman Frederic Bousquet at 47.03 -which is the second fastest split in history-, and fast splits (in the 47s) were recorded by Alex. Popov (Rus.) and Jason Lezak (U.S.);
.) in the 4x100 women free relay, U.S. won, anchored by an ace 53.xx from Jenny Thompson (U.S.).
He! he! he! :D ho! ho! ho!
I post this, ahead of www.swiminfo.com and www.swimnews.com who are sandbagging...

You don't read well:
Thorpe does what Thorpe decides to do, not me moving bars.
Kirk:
It's going to be harder for Thorpe to come back in that 50 free segment. There's a lot of muscle group changes involved in a pretty short time in a 200 IM. I think the race will be decided during the breaststroke length. Thorpe's going to have to work pretty hard to keep it close to Phelps coming into breaststroke. He might stay close coming into free but at what price?
I think Phelps beats Thorpe by more than 1 second and don't forget if Thorpe pushes that breaststroke too hard he might be passed by the Italian or Finn.
Anyone know how to get video feed via the web? Any site offering live results?
This is almost as good as listening to the 7th game of the 1961 World Series on radio.

ION,
In your analysis of Thorpe did you consider the fact that he is pacing himself throughout the meet?
...
He does pace himself.
A bet lefty:
.) $20 that Thorpe is not going to break his 800 meter free world record of 7:39.16 from 2001, during the rest of his career;
.) around 2005, he will start to specialize in the 100 meter free.
The only way that Thorpe beats Phelps in the 200 IM is if Phelps DQs or gets sick. Phelps will be ahead by 2-3 seconds after backstroke. In fact I would not be surprised if Phelps last 50 will be FASTER than Thorpe's (in the IM).
This is NO slouch on Thorpe, because this really isn't a fair comparison. Phelps is an IMer/ Thorpe is not.
The only way this debate can be settled is if Phelps goes a 1:45 in the 200 freestyle. And he will do that in about 2 hours in my opinion.
I don't think it's fair to hold Thorpe responsible about a 200 meter I.M. performance against Phelps.
Thorpe is not an I.M.er, he is a courageous competitor by taking on the I.M..
By the same token, why not Phelps against Thorpe in 800 free?
Thorpe is going to dismantle Phelps in that one.

That being said...DID ANYONE ELSE SEE THE DOLPHIN KICK OFF THE WALL THAT KITAJIMA (Japan) DID IN THE !)) ***? ARE YOU AS MAD AS I AM THAT HE WAS NOT DQ'D? Please reply.
Gareth mentioned this earlier.
Not paying attention to this thread, Beth?
Ion,
RE:Gareth mentioned this earlier...
Although the topic had already been mentioned, Beth's question, "ARE YOU AS MAD AS I AM THAT HE WAS NOT DQ'D," was new to the thread. The uncareful reader could easily make the same mistake as you so don't feel too ashamed.
And yes, my correction of you is a result of your obnoxious attitude towards others.
Well Beth, like me or dislike me, since I often tease and challenge, sometimes mindlessly.
Man, the big guns are moving in, in the 100 meter free.
Hoogenband (48.86), Lezak (48.93), Popov (48.94), Thorpe (49.14), Kapralov, Bousquet, Tucker are in the finals.
Frolander is out.
I'm getting the live results from Eurosport as suggested by Robin Parisi (Hey Robin I'm Jenny Luker's husband-too bad we'll miss you at Rutgers) at: www.eurosport.com/.../home_Lng0.shtml
But while the report the results no times. A little frustrating--anyone know how to get live results with times.
Congratulations to Great Britain on their first WC medal in 28 years (in the 50 ***-boy I hope they don't add 50s to the Olympics) and congrats to Popchanka for her gold in the 200 free.
Oh, nearly forgot, congrats to Phelps for his gold in the 200 fly.
He's now warming down getting ready for his 200 free. Hope Lefty is right--like to see a new US record.
