The finals of the first day, show:
.) in the men 400 meter free final, Thorpe (Aus.) went 3:42.58 for #1, Hackett (Aus.) went 3:45.17 for #2, and Coman (Rom.) went 3:46.8x for #3;
Coman -who is my fellow countryman, and I was telling you about him for years-, defeated Rossolini (Ita.) of the 2000 Olympics fame, Keller (U.S.) and Carvin (U.S.);
.) in the women 400 meter free final, Simona Paduraru (Rom.) finished #7, with a fast time;
.) in the 4x100 men free relay, Russia won;
the fastest split was by Frenchman Frederic Bousquet at 47.03 -which is the second fastest split in history-, and fast splits (in the 47s) were recorded by Alex. Popov (Rus.) and Jason Lezak (U.S.);
.) in the 4x100 women free relay, U.S. won, anchored by an ace 53.xx from Jenny Thompson (U.S.).
He! he! he! :D ho! ho! ho!
I post this, ahead of www.swiminfo.com and www.swimnews.com who are sandbagging...

Hey Ion,
If Biondi was a flash in the pan, then how would you rank Mark Spitz - after all he only swam in two Olympics ?
Talented, but without much longevity.
He got out of swimming at age 22 in 1972.
Could he have beaten in the 1976 Olympics, in the 200 fly, Mike Bruner (U.S.)?
Mike Bruner was tough...
Winners that confirmed themselves on top at the Olympics, are in descending order:
1.) Dawn Fraser (Aus.);
2.) Alex. Popov (Rus.) and Kieren Perkins (Aus.);
3.) Vladimir Salnikov (Rus.), Tom Dolan (U.S.) and Johnny Weissmuller (U.S.).
Dolan retired last year.
Fraser, Salnikov and Perkins are retired.
Weissmuller died years ago.
Popov, kicks some rear, right now.

This rationale behind the prelim, semi, final format escapes me.
...
It was reported once in www.nbcolympics.com that F.I.N.A. wants to make money out of this format.
This format is draining the racers though...
I would be in favor of moving the 100fly semifinal up in tonight’s program in order to give Phelps more rest. I know that in Track and Field such accommodations are made on occasion. What do you guys think?
Regarding Biondi being a flash in the pan. Here are a couple of non—swimmers to add to that list: Al Oerter, Ricky Henderson, Walter Payton, and Carl Lewis. ION – I used to think you actually knew something about swimming.
"Popov got the 21.64 World Record in 50 meter free in 2000, in a time trial during the Russian Olympic Trials.
Still the time trial was on choppy water, because it was a time trial comprising of five racers."
Ion-
This is total BS. Please explain to me how Popov swam "on choppy water" when there were only 5 swimmers in the race. What he did was swim in the middle lane with both lanes on either side of him empty to create ideal conditions for a WR swim. I have no problem with Popov, just tell the whole story when you post.
What an 800 by Jensen. He was 5 seconds behind Hacket at the 300 mark and ended up just 4.3 back at the end of the race. He has atleast a SHOT at beating Hacekt in the 1500 - but perhaps no until next year. I guess that 24,000 meter workout he did paid off!
Everyone talks a lot about Phelps doing the 100 fly and 200 IM in one night.....no one remembers that Jenny Thompson swam the 100 free final and 50 fly semi-final with only the semis of the mens 50 free in between. thats pretty gutsy if you ask me
Comparing what Thompson and Thorpe did (2 events in one night) to what Phelps must do has one flaw. Both Thompson and Thorpe swam their Finals event before their semi-final event.
Whoa Phelps went a 51.47 in the semi!
ANd now AMeanda Beard Sets a WR of her own (well she tied the record!). Could be 3 events, 3 world records set by Americans
