HI, I am a new masters coach and I am try to find some fun new things to do with my master swimmers. Like fun games, drills, and workouts to spice up some of my practices. If anyone has any ideas or suggests on things that you liked to do I would really appreciate your input. Thank you!!!!!:)

Thinking about those "Ron Ballatore" sets reminds me of why I got burnt out and quit swimming. "Not-so favorites" from my past. (and I was a sprinter) 100 X 100 60 X 100 stroke 10 X 1000 1 X 10,000 etc. Mind numbing!! (courtesy of our favorite Old Master Ron Johnson) I was reading about this new phenom who now has the American record for the 800 meters. 17,000 daily with 20,000 on Saturday. Totally insane!! The life of a Master is much better. I always start out with 500 free, 200 kick, and 300 back. From that point I do small sets of 50's, 100's, and 150's, depending upon how I feel. It is a pleasure to be my own coach and to work out as my body permits. This not meant to discourage a New Master's coach. Only to keep it all in perspective. Stick with small numbers, small sets, a variety of strokes, and an always have an alternative for the less driven.
  • No, Bert, that set is from Long Beach. I think Klaus Barth came up with it. If I were to give the PCC sets, nobody would want to come to my workouts. Monday main set = 5x500 (distance people did 800s) Tuesday = 20x 200IM Wednesday =15x300 Thursday = 10 x 400IM Friday = I don't remember, I'm too dizzy from the first four days Saturday = 30 (or more)x 100 Anyone who worked out for Ron Ballatore would recognize and remember these sets.

I like you and all, Paul, but I have some concerns about the "Naked Beer Relays"...I hope you are proposing this as a contest for good beer like Sierra Nevada or Fat Tire at the very least (oh, and coed relays would be nice, too).

Naked beer relays, is it that the beer is naked or the people. Just joking.

Michael, you just shown the difference in the community college system back in the 1970's between the men and the women. I had much easier workouts when I swam in community college than I did age group. Anyway, I had a coach when I was 17 years old that had you do several 200 breastrokes and butterflys in a workout.

Talking about El Seguado-don't they have the oldest or one of the oldest pools that is still in use in the west coast. I read about their meet on the internet and it stated it was built in 1940. I wonder is the old LA pool built in 1932 still use also. I remmeber the old pools that were 33 and 1/3 yards or 20 yards or one that is 50 yards. Just wondering.

Now THERE are some workouts for a new masters coach to drop on their constituents!!! Wonder which of those workouts the former fastest man in the world, Tom Jager did when he swam for Sticks? Sounds like Saturday was the sprint day...

Ole Hansen, San Clemente. Built in the mid '20's and hosted the 1928 Olympic Swimming Trials. 6 lane, 25 yards. Still works and still hosts a bunch of fast masters swimmers for noon workouts daily. When we get 4-5 swimmers going in our three end lanes, it's like a big swirling toilet bowl.

Good lord, Mike...that has GOT to be the STUPIDEST set you could ever come up with. Is that an old PCC set? You know the slackers at El Segundo could NEVER pull that one off...Are you going to Tempe? The Bergen's will have two-to-four representing the Slugs. Minderbinders is calling, Minderbinders is calling...
  • Naked. Beer. Relays. Can't go wrong with any combination of the three.
