Session Frequency vs Session Volume.

So, as a know-nothing-newbie, I decided that I should swim most days, but with very modest session totals. Lately I typically swim 1200m-2000m per session. (I love the idea of 10km per week!!) I've wondered if I would be much better off with 3km+ sessions, but maybe 3-4 times per week? The thing is - I love swimming daily, and I DO NOT LOVE being in the pool for over an hour. I'm doing what I love, but sometimes love is blind!! :) I'd love to hear from experienced swimmers if you think that most days per week at modest volumes is a better recipe than fewer times per week at much higher volumes. Maybe it depends on how newbie you are? Maybe it depends upon what you are training for? Thanks for any thoughts you may have on this. I appreciate it greatly.

I've basically been half-blindly experimenting for 4 weeks, and I confess to overdoing things in my newbie enthusiasm. I'm beginning to feel, as the dust settles, that 4 sessions per week will suit me best, as follows: Monday = wu + 50m + cd. Tuesday = wu + 200m + cd. Thursday = wu + 100m + cd. Friday = wu + 400m + cd. I think I am much more interested in 50m to 400m than I am in "distance" swims. I also think that my wu and cd will see 800m type easy swims. I take a loooooong time to wu/cd. The wu will include drills and 25m swims also. Edit: Actually I have no clue what I am doing. :)

You will find your way! :cheerleader: I was away from the sport for 31 years, and my only previous (organized) swimming experience was on my high school swim team that was "coached" by a P.E. teacher who didn't know how to swim. Joining in on the USMS Forums was how I found my way. The posted workouts are a great help, and the other Forumites answered my newbie questions. They also critiqued a lot of video footage of my strokes that I kept posting (and still do!). I also found this book to be a huge help! Good luck, and stick around! :chug:
