Butterfrog help requested

After resisting my coach's suggestion to learn butterfrog, I am finally relenting and taking the advice of King Frog, Nadine Day, and my team's relay coach, Donna Hooe. I can swim a legal butterfly forever (well, 2,000 yards non-stop that I know of), but it's slow. I would like to improve my times on both 200 fly and 400 IM, so my goal is to learn a legal (and good!) butterfrog. I saw instant positive improvements in my stroke count and 200-pace, 25-yard split. What used to be a 10-stroke 25 yard butterfly is now 8 strokes, and my time at 200 pace dropped almost two seconds. I have only practiced this for a few hundred yards, so I have a long way to go to getting it right! First of all, the undulation is missing, and I need to get the feel for it. I also notice that I'm not getting completely around on recovery and my wrists are bending on entry. In time, I'm sure I can work these out. Is this butterfrog legal? What suggestions do you have on how to improve? King Frog, I would especially appreciate your feedback as always! :agree: Topside- http://youtu.be/0yVfdN5CcXY Thanks flyers and frogs!
  • It certainly looks legal to me.Your timing looks good. You are bringing your arms too far down after the recovery, before you start the pull. This slows you down by getting you out of streamline.

King Frog, I can always count on you being the first to come help this tadpole. Thanks! :D It looks like my first goal has been accomplished: a legal butterfrog. As for the arms coming too far down, where have I heard that before? :rolleyes:Between my breaststroke and fly/frog, my arms sure like taking a dive! Now I have both strokes to work on getting those arms closer to the surface. :bouncing: Thanks for the advice! :agree:

If your eyes are on the Olympics DON'T DO IT. If its an old foggy race by all means do it.
  • It's interesting (and good) how much undulation you get. Most people using the *** kick on fly seem to go up and down too much. You are getting forward motion from the undulation. Great videos, very clear.

As for Bruce's videos, he's getting pretty good at it! He used to have to bend down on this knees and dunk the camera underwater while holding onto it; but, I rigged up a more comfortable option for him. The camera is now on a mount that is attached to a pvc pipe, so he can stand on deck while filming me, and just turn the pipe.
  • I found this buttefrog video on Youtube. Why wouldn't Terry put a dolphin kick in between the frog kicks? Should I do it this way instead? http://youtu.be/xW_d3XpXltY

  • I find I do better with a dolphin kick also, similar to what you do. I don't see the benefit in NOT doing a dolphin kick, so I'll stick with what I'm doing and work on improving it. I'm trying to keep my arms closer to the surface and keep my head between my biceps, so Bruce is is going to shoot more video so I can get that needed feedback.
