900 yard Butterfly- Really!

I didn't know whether I should post this on the "Swim Happy" thread or my thread, How do I train 400 IM without losing sprint speed? - U.S. Masters Swimming Discussion Forums , so I decided to start a new one, instead. :D As I mentioned on my other thread, I attempted a 200 fly and was thrilled to be able to do it. My next self-challenge was to see just how much fly I could swim. :afraid: So, I tried it today, my 6th day of swimming in a row which is always my recovery day. (My recovery days are usually Saturdays, but I took last Monday off, instead of Sunday.) Today, I did my typical 6th swim day routine: Arrive at the pool without a planned workout, see how I feel, and only use my watch for monitoring heart rates and rest intervals; no racing the clock! But, I brought along my camera, just in case I was in the mood to attempt my fly self-challenge. After 1,600 yards of various free and back (no breaststroke today; I did Allen's 100 & 200 breaststroke training yesterday), I decided to give it a go; much to the chagrin of my husband who was enlisted to film me. I lost track after 300 yards (300! :ohyeah:), but I kept going, knowing I could watch the video and count it up later. I wish I would have kept track, because I ended up doing 900 yards and felt like I could have kept going! :bliss: But, I got that if looks could kill look from my husband/videographer who, I'm sure, was tired of holding the camera. And, when I did finish, he :bitching:, because he was afraid I would injure my shoulders again. By now, I can just hear y'all (Geek?) out there doubting me. You don't believe any of this, right?:lmao: Well, kick back:popcorn: and check this out: http://youtu.be/4fmP1szg4mo It's not pretty; especially at the beginning, before I relaxed and settled in. And, I'll have to warn you, it took me over 20 minutes. :bed: Here are my splits, copied from my FLOG: Total time: 20:30 100 yd Splits (+/-): 100- 2:02 200- 2:10 300- 2:17 400- 2:21 500- 2:20 600- 2:17 700- 2:20 800- 2:23 900- 2:20 So, today, I lived up to Ande's nickname for me: Elaine-iaK. Guilty as charged! :groovy: P.S. I know it was ugly; I have a long way to go to get my technique up to speed. And, I have a long way to go to get my speed up to speed! But, today, I needed to rest my legs after yesterday's breaststroke workout, so I barely kicked. And, I had to go way off my :39, 50 fly PB to survive. BUT, I welcome feedback; especially constructive criticism on how I can improve my stroke. THANKS!
  • Yeah, I knew that; I was just teasin'! :D So, by the looks of it, you were the first Forumite to achieve Buttnernut status; at least of those who have come forward. 12/8/2007 was the date you swam 500 fly. And, it appears you are on Team NASTI! Well, then, as you know, you can let Doug Church know of your latest Butternut accomplishment and he will add it under your name, on the website. Way to go! :applaud: And, I am glad I inspired you! Hey, at least I'm good for somethin' around here... :bolt: Yes, I am a proud NASTI swimmer! I swim every Saturday and Sunday with the original "Butternut" Mr. Dan Welkin. I believe Dan did a 5,000 LCM butterfly last summer. Elaine, you really should start training for the 200 fly. You held form very well for almost 1,000....that's amazing. I think you'd be a natural + the competition to make top 10 really thins out in the 200 fly for women 50 and over. :applaud:

I already am starting to train for both 200 fly and 400 IM. :D Yesterday, I swam a broken 800 IM; one way to train for both, as well as my 200 breaststroke. Thanks for the suggestion and encouragement; I appreciate it! Maybe Geek is right, after all; at least about possibly being a better distant swimmer than sprinter... On my second attempt of 400 IM, I was already between a BB and a B on the Motivational Times Chart (I only have the 2010 one to refer to...) That's not exactly screamin' speed, but it was during a workout, from a push off, without giving it 100% effort. My goal is to do both 200 fly and 400 IM at Mission Viejo, in 2013, as well as at other meets before then. :bolt:
  • You need to check the " butter nut" club for distance fly!!!
  • You need to check the " butter nut" club for distance fly!!! Uhhhh, Orca, did you read the rest of the thread??? I already joined; check's in the mail! :D
  • Elaine, Amazing!!! When I want to go 900 yards//// I take the car! *** Braun The above message is an e-mail I received from the orthopaedic surgeon who operated on my shoulder for thoracic outlet syndrome. :lmao: By the way, Dr. Braun was 71 years old when he operated on me. He was the pioneer of the surgical technique used for my operation and known for being one of the top surgeons in the country for T.O.S. Fast forward almost nine years and he is still working full time and doing surgery! The guy has the steadiest hands I have ever seen and is sharp as a tack, at 80 years old. I want to grow up to be just like him- before I grow up to be like my 95 year old teammate, Anne Dunivin! :D

Having done a 900 fly, you are now officially fearless, and can sign up for either event, or both, with confidence! Here's a set I do a couple of times a year: Aussie Power IM Set 1 x 800 IM on 16:00 2 x 400 IM on 8:00 4 x 200 IM on 4:00 8 x 100 IM on 2:00 = 3200 Y/M in 64 minutes. "Aussie" because it has an 800 IM in it, which is something they actually swim in Australia. We should do it here! "Power" because everything is a power of two. We are allowed to be OCD in this sport! You can also call this set, "How to make 200 IMs a welcome relief." Next February in Auburn: ALL the "brute squad" events in a single day! 1650 free, 200 fly, 400 IM. I'm doing it! Be there! Be fearless!

Oddly enough, the brute squad day almost appeals to me. :D Hey, about that set, I think I could do it- just not at your intervals! Hmmm, another challenge... I wonder how long it would take me? :bolt: So, Swim', am I going to see you in Greenville??? :applaud:
  • Next February in Auburn: ALL the "brute squad" events in a single day! 1650 free, 200 fly, 400 IM. I'm doing it! Be there! Be fearless! If you do all this in a meet, or a workout, as per the guidelines, you can enter into the Brute Squad Swim here: http://www.brutesquadswim.com/ The website gets updated getting closer to the start date, which is November 1st, and runs thru Dec. 31st. Yards or meters works, and they do the conversions. While it's fun to do the brute events "for the fun of it", I'd personally rather "get something" like a paid for t-shirt/sweatshirt for my troubles. :D
  • ... you can enter into the Brute Squad Swim here: http://www.brutesquadswim.com/ ... :D I'm a total sucker for this. I hope they do it again next year. Thanks for the tip!
  • Great job! I've never tried to fly farther than 500 yards. I guess I'll have to get on that after Omaha :) Oh and make sure you join the Butternuts: www.grinswim.org/.../butternuts.html It's official; I just received my Butternut t-shirt today!
