I don't think his swim should count as a record for 3 reasons:
a) He has not been a slug for at least 5 years before competing again
b) He has not gained 30 lbs or more before competing again
c) He is an Olympian and USMS should create a separate record category for the gods who swim among us. Like Synchro does - call the category Grand Masters.
Just my two cents worth - that is about the value of this commentary. :)

I'm torn on all this. On the one hand, since there are no rules to the contrary, if you are a USMS swimmer in good standing, if you break a record, it should be yours. I also understand the HUGE benefit of having National Team members amongst our USMS ranks. When they come to Nationals, it is a HUGE draw for our members. Everyone wants to say they raced an Olympian. On the other hand, I wonder about maybe not allowing current national team members (people receiving stipends and the like from USA-S) to participate in USMS events or be eligible for records as full members. If they want to swim at Nationals, for instance, they can, but they would be exhibition, scoring no points and if used on a relay the relay would not score points. If they broke a record, it wouldn't be "officially" be broken.
Again, I see both sides of the argument here. Not necessarily a fan of one over the other. Maybe this is the sort of thing to start a new thread about. :2cents:
