  • The one thing that I guess is good out of all of this is that it gets people talking about swimming pretty far in advance from Olympic Trials. I don't really see how this system is better, I guess we will have to wait for them to swim wearing it to know for sure.
  • Speedo FASTSKIN3 Cap The Speedo FASTSKIN3 Cap is the world’s first to feature IQ Fit Cap Profile, designed using accurate 3D head mapping data. Made to fit head and face contours exactly, it delivers optimum comfort, outstanding hydrodynamic performance and ease of use. When combined with the Speedo FASTSKIN3 Super Elite Goggles, full body drag force is reduced by 5.7%. Swimmers with long hair can also benefit from the exclusive new Speedo Hair Management System, a bonded fabric cap with a non-slip edge that is structured to hold and shape longer hair to fill the gap at the curve of the neck so that it enhances the swimming form and improves hydrodynamics. Speedo FASTSKIN3 Super Elite Goggles Designed utilising accurate 3D global head scanning data, Speedo FASTSKIN3 Super Elite Goggles deliver unparalleled accuracy of fit, leak resistance and comfort and redefine goggle aesthetics and technology. With unique IQ FIT seal and strap and Dive Stream outer profile that improves the contours of the swimmer’s head, localised force is reduced by up to 63.4%, minimising the risk of goggle movement during a swim. The goggles also feature a Hydroscopic Lens that offers 180⁰ peripheral vision. Wow. As an academic and a teacher, I see a lot of hand-waving in an attempt to overcome a lack of substance, but I think Speedo's PR department has outdone itself this time. I don't think I've ever seen that much verbage dedicated to caps and goggles. A "hydroscopic" lens? Aren't ALL goggles, by defnition, hydroscopic? I suppose these goggles do, in fact, "re-define" goggle aesthetics. Just not in a good way. And can't ALL caps be fairly described as "hair management systems?" (No, sorry, it is EXCLUSIVE TO SPEEDO!!) Most laughable is the idea that the three parts are interconnected in some "synergistic" way. What, the goggles don't work without the cap? I am sure the suit will be priced too high for me to consider (as Patrick said, probably not much bang for the extra buck), but the cap and goggles might indeed be excellent products. I just wish they weren't so overhyped.

Plan on pre-ordering this morning. It looks like you can order everything separately.

  • FS3 is up & ready to PRE-ORDER NOW FOR A JANUARY 2012 DELIVERY They now offer a high waisted suit and the model is wearing it closer to his belly button, since the rules changed, I believed more coverage is faster. The rules say below the belly button and above the knee, but many elite male swimmers wore their suits far below their belly buttons. Giving up a BAND of coverage. I bet we'll see more swimmers wearing their suits higher. This suit has been fully approved by FINA. However, please note that the official period of approval will not begin until the publication of the FINA List of Approved Swimwear on January 1, 2012. If Speedo Fastskin3 is worn in competition prior to this date, any official records broken while wearing the swimsuit will not be ratified by FINA. • Only the 1% would even consider buying any of these products. $100 for goggles? Are they nuts?
  • Only the 1% would even consider buying any of these products. $100 for goggles? Are they nuts? Yeah, that was my reaction to the goggles. Cap looks ridiculously expensive as well. I did just pre-order the closed back suit though, and was able to use my 20% USMS discount.
  • Yeah but in backstroke, especially long course and/or outdoors, you need your peripheral vision to keep from running into the lanelines. I wear rather large Speedo Baja goggles for that reason. Apparently your peripheral vision or field of vision if unobstructed is about 200 degrees (100 to the left and 100 to the right). From wiki: "The normal human visual field extends to approximately 60 degrees nasally (toward the nose, or inward) from the vertical meridian in each eye, to 100 degrees temporally (away from the nose, or outwards) from the vertical meridian, and approximately 60 degrees above and 75 below the horizontal meridian.citation needed] In the United Kingdom, the minimum field requirement for driving is 60 degrees either side of the vertical meridian, and 20 degrees above and below horizontal. The macula corresponds to the central 13 degrees of the visual field; the fovea to the central 3 degrees. Your goggles obviously limit this field depending on their shape and lens. I've never checked to see how much my vanquisher's obstruct, but I'm guessing maybe i can see about 65-75 degrees each way or a total of about 130-150 degrees without "looking". Will try to check this out tomorrow morning. I'm not sure if they reduced the lens obstruction to get to 180 degree field or incorporated a wide angle "fish eye" lens on the sides or somethihg else. If you are flipped over and swimming on your back, you could now be able to see the lane ropes alongside with 180 vision that were previoulsy below and outside of your field of vision with goggles. You now could be able to see down to the plane of the water. Good point and might be interesting.

But... OK, I'll stop training in jammers. Yes, as a real swimmer you may no longer train in lycra jammers. I grew up in Arena, and so I am biased toward them and, to a lesser extent, TYR. I really, really soured on Speedo after their cynical behavior in the tech suit era.

Okay, here is my .02 and I won't hold back. This is the biggest turd of a marketing program I've ever seen. I mean really....a system?! How freaking gullible do you think people are (actually, don't answer that)? 1. You have 4 Olympians featured in your new suit and what color are they in? Freakin' Eskimo colors looking like they are going to the WINTER games. What happened to the ole' Red, White and Blue?! Even if it isn't the actually games suit....come on man! (insert voices of guys from ESPN NFL coverage). 2. Those goggles....hideous, need I say more. 3. Cap....wow, its a cap, you wear it on your head. No wonder Speedo is struggling....you just wasted how many millions on this turd? TYR, Arena, anyone.....the door is wide open. I have to agree. System? Body stability web? What tosh. Yes, every item can be slightly better than others, but what's the translation to swimming performance? And how exactly do they work together? I mean, is the 'body stability web' something to do with magnetic forces that are created by wearing all three pieces of kit. No, in my view they are three pieces of kit - and while I'm sure that each has been carefully designed, I just don't by the marketing. Unfortunately, 99% of age groupers will and parents will believe that if little Johnny doesn't have the 'system' they'll be letting him down.
