I been thinking.. as i watch the video of James magnussen swimming the 100m Free at the world championships i realized that his first 50 looked like the hybrid freestyle and his second 50 was more of a shoulder driven stroke.. Couple Months later the video of Cesar Cielo popped up on the internet from the Panamerican games and in his 400m relay, his first 50 was the hybrid freestyle and his second 50m he went back to his shoulder driven freestyle. he went his best 47.07 relay split and 47.84 in the 100m Free
My question is that by doing the hybrid for the first 50 and then shoulder driven for the second 50 is now the correct way to swim the 100 free?

I think you're thinking too much
Seconded. You need feel for the water, strength, and conditioning. All of this styles-of-freestyle stuff and obsession with the very latest top sprinters is beside the point. I have a lot of respect for Gary Hall and his technique insights, but you do not need the latest and greatest. Eleven years ago Popov went 21.64. Once you can do that, then you can start obsessing about more recent advances in swimming theory.
I would also question whether something that works for Cesar Cielo is necessarily going to work well for you.
I still don't understand what is supposedly different between the two 50's in the Cielo video.
I think Adrian might have posted the link to Cielo's 100m free event instead of his 100m leg in the 400m relay that apparently shows the differentation. In this clip the first 50m is pretty hard to see too.
If gaash described the " hybrid freestyle" stroke pattern above, and I'm understanding what Phelps is doing. My question is: does this add glide in Phelps ("hybrid freestyle"?) stroke cycles? And if so, does Phelps incredible legs and streamline allow this without loss of momentum ? Might not provide the same results for older, shorter, slower me.
I tend to agree and would think that this stroke style is best for those who have extremely strong kick...
Like most races, the best advice is to compete in it as often as possible, pay close attention to your performance and make adjustments as needed. Speaking of Popov, in his pre Olympic years he either competed in or simulated his focus events a minimum of 100 times.
great advice

the best way to improve our speed, speed endurance and racing is to race.
train to race
There any magic bullet short cuts. Wish there were.
Do the work. Develop the ability.
