Hello everyone, I am writing a piece on the relationship between dancing and swimming for the next issue of SWIMMER. I would love to hear your thoughts and opnions on that relationship, if you think one exists. Me, I think swimmers and dancers share grace, excellent body awareness and pointed toes :-) And more, but now it's up to you! Thanks, Laura

Rundumb I guess the reason I did not come first in all of my races. I never did drills. My training consisted of too few yards. Had Mono and only trained about 500 yards a day during the years 1952 to 1958. Started swimming marathon races in 1962. Did lots of milage after 62 until I retired after a great white shark followed me for 10 miles during a race to Block Island in 1968.

Wow, thanks for everyone's thoughtful responses. I appreciate the time everyone is taking to help SWIMMER be a better publication!
  • Hi Laura, I,ve been swimming with Masters for 17 years, and I started doing ballroom dance/competition about 8 years ago. It is ASTOUNDING to me the similarities between the things that my swim coach and dance instructor tell me about all my stroke flaws, and major issues. It's as if they've had a meeting to try to help me. I'd be happy to chat with you more if you think it might be helpful for your article. My email is jmkregor@yahoo.com.

Unless paralyzed, everyone can dance (some sort of dance :groovy:), but not everyone can swim. :drowning: The fact that the process of drowning looks like a desperate dance is just a proof that those who can't swim can nevertheless dance. :D

Don't be so sure. My first dance was when I was 23 years old. I am known for my one dance skill "The Chicken Scratch"... as my wife calls it. Unless paralyzed, everyone can dance (some sort of dance :groovy:), but not everyone can swim. :drowning: The fact that the process of drowning looks like a desperate dance is just a proof that those who can't swim can nevertheless dance. :D
  • I was a trained ballerina and I find swimming as an adult very simple because of my background as a dancer. Esp breatstroke, even today my coach made some remark about my br and how I swam it in high school and I reminder her that I never had that opportunity at that age. I attribute that to my dance background.
