I imagine you know that the open water venue is Lake Balaton in the town of BALATONFÜRED. This is 135 km (1 hour 30 min drive by car), southwest of Budapest.
in Ricconni you could use your bus pass to get to the openwater...it was just a few stops down the main road in the adriadic sea
in Montreal it was also a short bus ride to the venue (olympic rowing basin)
for the openwater in Medelin - PanAm's 2015 - it was actually in Guatape and was 2hrs by bus. we had motorcycle police escort us both ways from Medelin to Guatape and back. 1st wave of busses was for 1st wave of swimmers/spectators and 2nd set of busses for 2nd wave of swimmers/spectators. it was actually very well planned out.
i can give lots of tips, but if you want to be in the "medal" wave at worlds...enter with a impossibly fast time. as an example there were 5 in my age group that entered in 30:00 for a 3000m openwater. i entered in a respectible time and didnt make the top 50 wave cut. i tried to appeal being moved to the top50 after placing 3rd in the 800m and was flat out told NO!
like i said, i can give lots of info on what to plan for and what to avoid.
ultimately you have to chose:
1) are you going there to swim fast
or
2) are you going there to have fun
it's an exclusive OR
