In Iceland, for example, swimming is their national sport, and there are great pools everywhere, even in small towns. We were on a small group tour, but we had free time in the afternoons. We were encouraged to spend that time at the local pool and meet the locals. I brought along a bunch of the USMS caps I had accumulated from various events, and I gave them away to to local swimmers I met in the pool. It was a lot of fun and one of the most memorable parts of the trip! If you are curious about that experience, I wrote some blog posts about it at ElainesTravels.com . Enter "Iceland" in the search box. (I do not monetize my blog, so ads will appear.) If I am on a small group tour in a country where there aren't hotel pools or local public pools, I enjoy doing a lot of walking instead. I also do dryland exercises when time permits. Places2swim.com is a great resource, and I use it all the time! To supplement it, I do a Copilot (AI) search for the closest pools around where I am staying. Sometimes, I will get a hit on a pool that is not on places2swim.

Forum Post: RE: Swimming while on vacation

When I'm traveling, I try to drop in with a Masters club or, if that doesn't work, take a break from swimming. Our bodies need time off here and there to recuperate; vacations are a wonderful opportunity to do so. I like to spend my vacation vacationing, so not working out gives me another 60-90 minutes in my day, too.

Forum Post: RE: Swim Faster Faster

You have a good plan. If I didn't already have a coach I was doing this with, I would consider it. Regarding filming, I made a tool for my husband to film me underwater from the side, walking alongside on deck as I swim. I attached a camera mount to a PVC pipe, and the camera is mounted on it.

Forum Post: RE: Kristi's workouts

6-1-26 4300LCM 800 swim 200 kick 4 x 50 d/s @ :55 1 x 100 double streamline 4 x 25 build @ :30 Main: 3 x 200 @ 3:10descend 2 x 50 easy @ 1:05 3 x 150 descend to race pace @ 2:25 1 x 50 easy @ 1:05 8 x 100 @ 1:40 #1 50fast/50easy, #2 50easy/50fast, #3 all easy, #4 all fast, repeat Post set: 5 x 100 kick w/fins @ 1:50 4 x 100 pull rotate fast 25 @ 1:35

Forum Post: RE: Swim Faster Faster

It sounds like you've found a great arrangement that works for you! The offering I have in mind would have what you mention, as one of the offered tiers. It would include stroke video analysis of races or general videos, as well as splits and race plans, X times per month or year. I'm also considering that as something offered as an ad-hoc service (on demand - likely per hour). I would also recommend a video review of you practicing the skill or stroke change to confirm that you're reinforcing the change correctly, giving you the best chance of carrying it into your races. I have a recommended setup for recording video with both an above- and underwater camera, allowing the person taking the video to keep up with the swimmer rather than just staying in one position and capturing the swimmer as they pass by.

Forum Post: RE: Swim Faster Faster

Your criteria for tailored workouts makes sense, but I am currently doing workouts that have been specifically tailored to my races and flaws within those races. I have been working virtually with a coach from my team who I pay by the hour to coach online, because my team is located too far away for in-person coaching. She reviews my husband's race videos from my meets and coaches me on stroke technique, which is my top priority. In addition, my husband shoots underwater videos at practice to provide different angles for her to better coach my technique.

Forum Post: RE: Swim Faster Faster

Of course!! I would expect no less. I would not only tailor a workout to the individual level/race times, but also other considerations - Duration of session (40 - 90 Min) Work vs. Rest time spent (If you are being asked to swim faster, you need rest to be able to do it again) SCY, SCM, LCM Injuries Goals Strengths & Weaknesses # of workouts in a week (or maybe just "starting/starting over"?) Here's a sample of a 60-minute workout I did last week - Tuesday, May 26, 2026 - 25 SCY 90(ish) seconds between sets Warm-up: 500 - 100 Free, 100 Pull, 100 Kick, 100 Scull, 100 Drill. Very slight build in each 100 Giddy-Up: 4 x 50's on 1:30. Descend to 200 pace. If you hit 200 pace before #4, stop there. Main Set #I: 12 x 75's Choice - FAST! Broken :10 at the 50 on 2:00 or 2:15 or 2:30. Interval should be what gets you 1:00 to 1:15 of rest after each 75. Goal for each 75, is a total time (including the :10 break) at or better than your 100 time. i.e. 1:10 100 Free best time = 1:10 total time for a 75 Free with :10 rest at the 50. Main Set #2: Sprint 4 x 50's Choice KICK on 2:00. Preferably the same kick for all 4 and no fins. Main Set #3: Sprint 4 x 25's Swim Choice WITH FINS on 1:00 50 or 100 Easy & Out Around only 2,000 total yards, but a lot of quality work. Just do a search for “Mexico City, Mexico.” I can’t speak about the “fitness clearance from a doctor,” but the website is good for locating pool. How do you go about it? I just did my first swim in nearly three weeks after being on a European vacation (six countries, numerous cities — no more than two nights at any given place). Usually, in these forums, I’m the guy providing the “Find a Pool Anywhere” link for people asking how or where to swim while they themselves are traveling. I post the Find a pool link ( https://www.places2swim.com/ ). But, because we were moving around so much…eight days of the trip were a river cruise on the Rhine River…I didn’t have an opportunity to swim. Fortunately, I can rely on a bicycling, and a bit of running. So, during our stops, I was able to get ashore and go for a run, or grab a ‘share bike’ and go for a long bike ride. (At one port I took a share bike for a 32 mile ride. Someone commented “That’s probably the longest ride that bike will ever be on!”) We were docked long enough on a couple occasions that a more industrious person could have identified a nearby pool, and made arrangements to get there for a swim. After the cruise, we were in Berlin for three days and I actually looked at the link, and ID’d a couple potential pools. My luck…they were closed for some German holiday weekend. But with language barriers and such…generally I just wasn’t up to the task with limited time. (FYI, those Viking river cruise boats are otherwise very clean and well appointed, but don’t even have a fitness room on them.) I did have my static line that I occassionally use for “stationary swimming” with me — when traveling I’ll use it in small hotel pools, and can at least do something it the water that resembles swimming. But, as is sometimes the case, the pools were usually too crowded with families and kids to do that. So, back home, I finally made it to the pool. For me, after a layoff of this long from swimming, my first swim back is essentially just getting back my ‘muscle memory’ for swimming. Not really “muscle” per se. But I always find that my breathing is just ‘off’ for that first swim after a layoff. And, of course, I don’t want to pull, strain, or otherwise cause an injury. Consequently, I don’t even try to swim at more than a moderate effort. So, that’s done. And, the open water should be warming up enough in the next couple weeks, and my summer swimming will get to its usual routine. — Dan

Forum Post: RE: The day the Forum died

I agree.
