7x(500 free)
#1 on 6:30
#2 on 6:20
#3 on 6:10
#4 on 6:00
#5 on 5:50
#6 on 5:40
#7 on 5:30

Instructions were: "build 1-5, #6 90%, #7 100%"
A swimmer was doing the set when I was there. His first 500 was 5:39 and his last was 5:00.

I suspect that on a very good day I could make the interval on the first two...

RE: Crazy MASTERS workouts

I am bookmarking this for a future solo workout ... of course, I might need to taper/shave to hit that 1:55 in workout!

Want me to ask Mark if he wants to give us this workout when you visit on Tuesday? I'm not so sure of the intervals, though; I think he would probably want to use the original ones Heather gave.

He was talking about giving you another crack at the 150/200 workout he gave us last time you visited:

4 x 150 on 2:15
1 x 200 on 2:15
3 x 150 on 2:15
1 x 200 on 2:15
2 x 150 on 2:15
1 x 200 on 2:15
1 x 150 on 2:15
1 x 200 on 2:15

150s are cruise, 200s are "hold best average."

RE: Crazy MASTERS workouts

Used it while coaching... Thanks for the encouragement, Danielle. A lot has changed for me since October 1 when I posted on the subject. I'm now going on one month with a great Masters group and couldn't be happier. The folks I swim with are really great and our coach is absolutely fabulous. From day one, I was made to feel like one of the group and have no worries whatsoever.

RE: Crazy MASTERS workouts

Debaru...stick with it for sure. That is way intimidating--way fast. They must like you....

The good news--obviously you will get faster.

The bad news--facing a crushing workout day after day where you know you will be demoralized may not be the best thing.

My advice is to drop in on some other groups from time to time just to make yourself fell better.

RE: Crazy MASTERS workouts

Hey, Flyqueen. I feel (i.e., felt) your pain. I tried out a Masters team in my area for a week a couple of months ago, and they totally kicked my non-elite @$$ in pretty much the same way.

I would love to swim with them on a regular basis, but I know I may never swim as fast as them (I'm 55 and have only been back in the water for a year after a 38 year absence). Part of me says "so what" swim with them anyway, but the other part isn't so sure. I felt like I was in their way the entire time, which wasn't fun for me (or them probably). :badday:

So, are you planning on sticking it out for the long term?

Yup they are my long term plan. Great group of guys, very nice and supportive. The pool is less than a mile from home, too. It's also cheap. Bottom line: they are great.

IF I had been able to stay in the pool I would have made the 200s 150s or moved to an empty lane. I'm a total sprinter so my other thought would have been to do the first (or middle) 100 of the 200 and race it all out then recover.

Most masters groups are very understanding. I joked with one teammate that I would have needed fins, paddles and prayer to make that set. They said bring 'em and your rosary. Hilarious!

Keep going back. You'll get faster. Do what you can do and don't worry about the rest.

RE: Crazy MASTERS workouts

Definitely a tough set. No way I could make the 2:00, but I could get through the set thanks to the next 100 being on 1:30!

that was my thought too. I might be able to squeeze out a 2:08 to make the third 200, and be able to recover during the first 100 on 1:30.

but I would not be able to make the 2:00, even with fins and paddles on. my college time was around 1:52 and have a race time of about 1:58 today. but with it being last my only goal would be to not allow the first person in my lane to lap me

RE: Crazy MASTERS workouts

Yup they are my long term plan. Thanks for the encouragement. I really like your attitude about the whole thing. But, I am totally jealous of your situation. My problem is that the closest Masters club is 15 miles from me, which makes it tough to get there during the week. That pesky thing called "work" gets in the way.

So, I'm thinking I should just go to the Saturday or Sunday workout. Things might be a bit more mellow on the weekend (one can only hope). :)

RE: Crazy MASTERS workouts

Definitely a tough set. I'm not a 200 swimmer AT ALL. Friend of mine that's a coach watched me attempt to swim the 200 at nationals. His comment, "yeah, by the 150 it was very clear you are a sprinter. Ouch!" I was dying well before that point.

This was the main set this morning, it is SCY but still ...

4 X (3 x 100 1 @ 1:30, 1 @ 1:10, 1 @ 1:30, 200 free)
Round 1 200 Fr @ 2:30
Round 2 200 Fr @ 2:20
Round 3 200 Fr @ 2:10
Round 4 200 Fr @ 2:00

Being nowhere near fast enough to do almost any part of this set AND being a "drop dead" sprinter AND having to get out to get to work on time I missed all of it sans the first 3 100s which were more than enough.

I believe at least a couple made the entire set ... I told a teammate I would have needed fins, paddles and prayer to come close ...
