My masters team-mate talked me into this one:

Now I'm getting nervous b/c if it's in the Hudson on a rectangular course, then part of it will be against the current--with a current assist, I think I

RE: Entered 2 Bridges 5k swim 5/31--input on the race, please?

I'd love if they'd have something like this:

www.phillyrivercast.org/

On the home page, there is a Schuylkill Rivercast, which indicates water quality for a given day (upper left corner) and explains the significance of the three different colors. Green, for instance, is okay for just about any activity; yellow and red indicate warnings, with red to be taken most seriously.

I found this for Ploughkeepsie:

www.riverkeeper.org/.../

More detailed, but I admit I like the simplicity of the Philly one.

RE: Entered 2 Bridges 5k swim 5/31--input on the race, please?

The water temp in Poughkeepsie today is 63.3F today, with very warm weather ahead. I have a question about the
Poughkeepsie area. In Manhattan we try to avoid the water after a heavy rainfall because of sewage overflow. Is this the case in Poughkeepsie? There's currently a strong likelihood of several days of bad weather before the event. Just curious how much this could impact the swim farther up north.

RE: Entered 2 Bridges 5k swim 5/31--input on the race, please?

I signed up, too, but without the benefit of a glass of wine. Water temp is on track to be mid-high 60’s for event day.

RE: Entered 2 Bridges 5k swim 5/31--input on the race, please?

That's doable for me, though I've decided to opt for the 2.5k--not sure I have the speed for the 5k. A friend of mine is doing the 5k. We might finish at the same time if I do half of his distance. :) We've been getting some hot weather here in Philly which is warming up the Schuylkill--Sat. when I swam there, the temp was 72. But the Schuylkill is a lot more sheltered than the Hudson!

RE: Entered 2 Bridges 5k swim 5/31--input on the race, please?

That sounds lovely!

RE: Entered 2 Bridges 5k swim 5/31--input on the race, please?

I'm still on the fence about making the switch to the shorter race. Got a very nice email from the RD saying that there was always the option of finishing after one lap if the need arose. But I know how I am. I'll want to swim the distance I signed up for so could see myself going for a 2nd lap even if it turns out inadvisable and then perhaps getting into difficulty. I know I can swim the distance in the pool. Did 6000 yds Sun. But the Hudson is a whole other kettle of fish. We'll see!

RE: Entered 2 Bridges 5k swim 5/31--input on the race, please?

My friend sent me the link while I was having a glass of wine. In this case, the upstream portion closer to the center of the river (where the current is stronger). All three times, the current declared negligible through the PA system, but in the water it could be felt. The last time (my best outing), I adjusted stroke using shorter more rapid stroke rate for going up stream, and long gliding stroke for downstream. It's a mental challenge.

I've long wanted to do this 2 Bridges. One day...

RE: Entered 2 Bridges 5k swim 5/31--input on the race, please?

I did the 5k two years ago. It is a fun event. Depending on the start time, the tide shift can be pretty strong. I was fine on the first lap (we started at the bottom of the tide) . (\I had to work pretty hard on the second lap after the tide shifted.

Thanks for the info! This might work better for me as a 2.5k swim, I'm thinking. My friend will be done w/ 5k by the time I finish half that! :) I want to get the distance in but I also don't want to get so hung up swimming against the current that I don't get to finish. We'll see.

I've done longer than that distance, but with a current assist.

RE: Entered 2 Bridges 5k swim 5/31--input on the race, please?

I did the 5k two years ago.
