At about what rate would you all suggest I increase the distance of my long swims? I would offer a suggestion that you post your questions on her workout page, I am sure she would be very helpful and have some good suggestions for you. If not, let me know and I will get after her.... I am her father.....

Hoosier, you got a great daughter there. I love her workouts and she's very responsive to questions.

Warning to others though: You can't just post a thread in the workout sections; that is for the coaches only. But you can remark on one of her posts, so I suggest that.

Good luck to Mallory on that 88K OW swim this weekend. Can't think about driving that far...

RE: Building up mileage?

SF nice way to put it. Thanks; I peek in on those workouts every now and again... even trying to incorporate some of her kick series drills; I'm not good about that kind of stuff... I just like to jump in and swim, but I'm getting to the point where I need to work on my skills in a more deliberate way to make any more improvement.

RE: Building up mileage?

On a side note, I wish we had more snow in VT this year

You can have the snow here in WI! Which isn't that much this year anyway... early OW season?

BTW, any ideas how much of your yardage should be pool vs. open water in preparation for 10k to 10 mile OWS? Obviously, our OW season is a lot shorter here...

RE: Building up mileage?

I would like you to know that she is currently out of the country in preperation for am 88k race in Argentina, so if she is slow to respond that is why.

RE: Building up mileage?

FYI, on the workout sections of this web page is now a section for marathon open water swimming workouts posted by Mallory Mead. I agree. 10 years ago I trained for a marathon and used the same idea with the 10% increase on the "long" day each week. I also think that if you add too much your risk for injury really jumps - the body needs to gradually get used to churning out longer distances or a small setback will just snowball into something more serious.

Any time I find myself making a jump of more than 10% in a long swim things start to fall apart... so if you're doing 5000 continuous swim pretty well this week, don't jump to 6000 next week; 5500 is your limit.

RE: Building up mileage?

There are some training tips from the Kingdom Swim here. Get used to building in a long swim once a week - over a few months I worked up to a 90 minute non-stop swim for the 10k I swam last year.

That's a pretty cool site; I think they're right about the minimums for weekly yardage... they are definitely only minimums--"do more." Thanks for the link!

RE: Building up mileage?

Thx SFBaySwimmer, makes sense, similar approach to building up running mileage

Yeah the advice read like it was straight from Peter Pfitzinger. I actually think most swimmers can be a little more aggressive in their build (than a runner), but you are planning so far in advance that there is no need to.

RE: Building up mileage?

There are some training tips from the Kingdom Swim here. And every 4th week take a recovery week where you scale back to 50% of the yardage done in the 3rd week of the cycle. Gives your body a chance to recover and avoid overuse injuries.
