I've coached a swimmer twice at Magog back in the late 1990s in the pro race. Because of 9/11, the race course was changed due to the difficulty in securing visa's for many of the foreign swimmers.

Magog is one of the nicest places I've ever been. The people are fantastic.

Highly recommended.

This swim was brutal last year... a midnight start against a 20+ mph head wind. Liz Fry, Greg O'Connor, Elaine Howley, and Charlotte Bryn all finished. (I was rather happy when the swimmer I was crewing for had enough.. it was freezing, and all my clothes were soaked.)

RE: New ultra-marathon swim in Lake Memphremagog

This is one of the best and toughest marathons out there. "There are six organized swims of 25K (15.5 miles) or longer in the United States next year" and one of them is "various stages of the 8 Bridges Hudson River Swim"? Now I think David and Rhoni deserve more recognition than that. How about:

Prior to last year there were only 5 organized swims of 25K (15.5 miles) or longer in the United States each year. Through the amazing efforts of David and Rhondi that number has now almost doubled.

RE: New ultra-marathon swim in Lake Memphremagog

Good point! Turns out I also forgot to mention the 17-mile Rose Pitonof Swim in NYC - oddly, on the same day as Ederle.

RE: New ultra-marathon swim in Lake Memphremagog

I'm looking forward to checking these out. Otherwise, you can't access the workouts posted by those coaches).
Quick rundown:
Laura Schuster, Mountain View Masters: new swimmers, tris
Eric Mitchell, Red Tide Swimmers, NY: competitive stroke and IM training
Mallory Mead, So. Cal. Aquatics: OW
Leslie Livingston ("The Fortress"): High-intensity, Pithy Sprinty stuff
Patrick Brundage: high volume
Sara McLarty: triathlon training
Danielle Newton, Durham Area Masters Aquatics: expectant mothers

The Workouts forum should still have the workouts from the 2011 USMS coaches, which will be archived for future reference.

Edit to add: to join USMS (and so get access to workouts), there is a "join/renew" button on the top page of the site, which takes you here:
http://www.usms.org/reg/
You don't have to be good or fast or compete or even swim organized workouts with a team to join.

Thanks so much for your detailed answer! Yes, I'm a member of usms and I look forward to seeing the new workouts online.

RE: New ultra-marathon swim in Lake Memphremagog

I'm going to piggyback a bit and remind folks to get their registrations in for the July 7, 2012, 10-mile event in the same lake. 51 of 75 spots are taken.

Dang, would love to do that event, but the soonest we'd be back in the states (if the service sends us back there) would be mid- to late-July. I'm doing Swim the Suck in October, so I'll be looking for a close 10K sometime btwn our return and the TN race. Perhaps the Potomac river 10k?

Echo the thanks Evan. I use your US marathon list in my planning. I hope to update my European one soon.

RE: New ultra-marathon swim in Lake Memphremagog

Sent you a pm.

With a few exceptions, almost every (U.S.) swim you could think of has been done by somebody on the forums.

Edit to add: The 7 new online coaches for 2012 include a long-distance specialist (Mallory Mead), a tri specialist, and a volume specialist. Their workouts will be in the Workouts forum on this site (register with USMS to view).

Sprints and interval work are part of LD training.

Hi Marjorie, I'm new to ows and could use the help re workouts. Could you point me to where you found/find this?
Thanks,

RE: New ultra-marathon swim in Lake Memphremagog

Hi Marjorie, I'm new to ows and could use the help re workouts. So much more enticing than another round or six of Big Shoulders (a fine swim in itself, but how many times does one need to swim over that half-submerged grocery cart?).

Hi Marjorie! It's tempting. I had a lovely Sept. swim in the Saco R. in NH couple years back. Water is starting to cool down. And Canada - well, polar bears, Hudson Bay, similar exotica.
I gather passports will be needed, as for crossing the English Channel?
:)
