It is called the "Missouri 340" because it is 340 miles long. The 2011 race began yesterday and is in progress. Participants are allowed 88 hours to finish the race and, according to the race web site, "...To finish this race in 88 hours is a huge accomplishment. Only 2/3 of the teams were able to do that last year."

You can read about the race here:

Over a 10-year period beginning in the 1850s, about 400 steamboats sank in the Missouri River.

RE: kansas City to St Louis

Thanks Jayhawk. I'm a St. Louis girl, and those rivers speak to me on many level. Do you get to swim into the confluence?

RE: kansas City to St Louis

I suggest you contact the Kansas Riverkeeper, who also happens to be a swimmer. You can contact her through the Friends of the Kaw at www.kansasriver.org. While the Friends of the Kaw focus on the Kansas River, I believe they are involved with the KC-to St. Louis canoe race each year and I am sure they are familiar with the Missouri River.
