You may want to inquire with the race director to see if they have a gear check-in. Many races have one using your race number to store your stuff while you swim, which is very convenient. Good luck!

After you sign in, you can return license to car (if not too far to walk). If I am very concerned, I duct tape key to my swimsuit. Most events I am familiar with have a sort of place for swimmers to leave backpacks with towels and dry clothes, but it is not necessarily watched, or watched carefully. It's good if there is a swimmer number matching system as described. Otherwise, there is a certain amount of trust involved.
