I signed up for Pensacola 10K after seeing your post. I have done Chesapeake Bay and like it very much but now I can add another of these to my list.

I am looking forward to this one as I have never been to the area. I will have to make the trip to Franco's and I'll join you on the beach for an Ultra after the finish.

Franco

Franco - I was very tempted by the 10K but am sticking with the 5K...

The race start and finish for the 10K is at the Bay Beach Inn, Gulf Breeze, FL... 51 Gulf Breeze Parkway
Gulf Breeze, FL 32561
(877) 747-8713

user friendly for swimmers with or without kids... I am trying to run down the number for the inn itself and not the toll-free chain / reservation number. in recent swims, the inn has had a favorable rate less than the priceline / hotwire rates. will run you down closer to the swim.

RE: best bridge swims in the United States

There's also the Lake Padden swim in Bellingham. In Kent WA they have what they call Friday night swims. I've never been there but they look fun

I had a great long weekend several years ago which included the long bridge swim and a cascade lakes swim - portland - sandpoint - bend - portland. needless to say I drove much of the time I wasn't in the water.

RE: best bridge swims in the United States

educate us too... are there bridge swims in the pacific northwest?

It is a one-way race from Pensacola to Gulf Breeze, FL... good food and drink at the finish often including Michelob Ultra.

The 2010 incarnation, Sunday, May 23, will include a 10K... from Gulf Breeze and return... www.3milebridgeswim.org/

A bushwacker at the sandshaker lounge at pensacola beach is a must... Franco's Italian Restaurant‎ in pensacola is excellent, and a perfect pre-race dinner. i highly recommend a trip to pensacola's fish market - Joe Patti's - too

I've done this swim alone, as a bachelor weekend on at least two ocassions, with the pregnant fiance, and now :bow:my bride and :bow:6-month old daughter are looking forward to the 2010 swim.

jgale - I have done the chesapeake 1-mile with success. I've always headed out too quickly to see or enjoy post-swim activities.

a few friends have found a nearby blue crab restaurant that looks unbelievable, but i've neglected that too.

the chesapeake swims - 4.4 and 1 - are top-notch.

my bucket list includes the rockland breakwater swim.

RE: best bridge swims in the United States

I like Chesepeake because of the distance but I think the Save the Bay swim in Rhode Island is just as well organized, has better shirts and a much better post race party. Great back-bay swim in calm water with some subtle navigation challenges. Good start and finish facility with showers.

The Rainbow Channel Swim near AC used to go under bridges for the Garden State Parkway and Route 9. Scary to see how in need of repair they were. Course is different now and no bridges.
