I should mention that the GLOWS series is the inspiration of Marcia Cleveland, godmother, -father, and Good Fairy to all OW swimmers.

Now, how cool is that!

:)

Thanks to the several other Great Lakes Zone LMSC ppl who worked hard over several months to get these swims in place, as listed in the pdf.

I am training (loosely) for the 10K; this series sweetens the pot of motivation. I can't wait to hear more! :)

RE: Illinois swim, GLOWS series (Great Lakes OW Swim series)

Here is the pdf with event lengths, contact info, and relevant Web sites: www.ilmsa.com/.../2010GLOWSSeriesDescription.pdf

what an excellent swim series...

now us open water swimmers need a bi-annual mackinaw bridge swim to cap the GLOW series...

an annual mackinaw offering is too much to ask for.

RE: Illinois swim, GLOWS series (Great Lakes OW Swim series)

The latest I find with a quick Google search is Labor Day, 2007, the Mighty Mac Swim, crossing the Straits of Mackinac in celebration of the 50th anniversary of bridge completion.

Perhaps a new series is warranted: the STRAITS series. The most horrible passages in North America (Canada has some fine entries).

A fine lake-hopping summer might start with an event in all five Great Lakes, then move east to the Finger Lakes, through the Adirondacks, into the Northern Kingdom of Vermont, which has a five-swim series, incl. Lake Memphremagog, to finish up at Eagle Pond, NH (possibly the eponymous "Golden Pond" in the movie of same name. Anyway, I like to climb North Kearsarge, which overlooks Eagle Pond).
