the goggles i use in OW are different than the goggles i use in the pool.
for me, long lasting comfort means that my goggles are as loose as they can be without leaking. this will vary with conditions (wind, chop, etc) but, my tightest OW adjustment and goggle choice will still leak in the pool when i push off the wall.

for OW, i like blue 70 vision

RE: The Triple Crown

Thank you very much Munatones, chaos, for the information and tips. While nearly 100% of pool swimmers regularly place their goggles lenses on their forehead in between sets during pool workouts, this is not a practice that is recommended for established/experienced marathon swimmers who learn to adjust their goggles by facial movement in the pool and open water. By constantly adjusting your goggles during pool workouts, you tend not to learn how to adjust your goggles "on the fly" which will take time, assuming you are wearing goggle that fit well in the first place. Good luck.

RE: The Triple Crown

Just a quick question about goggles for anyone who swam long distance in open water (such as Channel swimming): did you have to adjust your goggles from time to time? It's hard for me to imagine having goggles sucked to your eye sockets for more than 10 hours. My goggles would leak after even a few laps in the pool. Even if it doesn't leak, I like to loosen it when I'm not swimming.

RE: The Triple Crown

I know, Hoosier, lighten up :))) just messing with you

RE: The Triple Crown

I was making no comment as to who would win, simply following the discussion as to what it took to get the opportunity to swim....good luck to you in your swim. :) as we always say, 'watch out for outside smoke!"

RE: The Triple Crown

I checked this years entry for the MIMS for the women, (know the most about) and I believe all but one maybe two have swam the English Channel. Like horse racing, some people define the Triple Crown in different ways from the traditional Triple Crown (English Channel, Catalina Channel and Manhattan Island Marathon Swim). Alternatives are listed here: 10kswim.blogspot.com/.../crowning-achievement-triple-crown.html.

There is also the Ocean's Seven which has not been achieved yet, although James Pittar of Australia (10kswim.blogspot.com/.../james-pittar-attempting-oceans-seven.html) is on his way: 10kswim.blogspot.com/.../oceans-seven.html.

There is also the Five Oceans, made famous by Lewis Pugh: 10kswim.blogspot.com/.../five-oceans-of-lewis-gordon-pugh.html

RE: The Triple Crown

Wow. the manhattan swim (MIMS) is becoming very competitive just to get in. they accept 25 solo swimmers per year based on some combination of diversity goals and first come/first serve. the 2010 MIMS application goes on line this monday, the event is june 12. if you have the opportunity, i would recommend the following activities: get a friend or two and swim it as a relay, volunteer to be a boat observer for the event, do the qualifying swim just for fun... warm feedings help (4 hours in 61 degrees or less), enter the little red lighthouse swim; this event is about 6 miles with a current that makes it more like a 3-4 mile swim. it is the longest event that the MIF hosts around manhattan.

i have more thoughts that i'll post later, but its time for me to go swimming.
