HUNDREDS of competitors were left disappointed yesterday when the open water swim at the World Masters Games was cancelled because the water was too cold.

They don't mention being worried about sharks in that area :fish2:

RE: Cold water poured on ocean swim race

Rub it in why don't you! :)
but maybe it was only the Americans we were worried about hehehe
just kidding

RE: Cold water poured on ocean swim race

Another stereotype shattered. So much for the rugged Aussie he man Crocodile Dundee image. 100’s if not 1000’s of U.S. open waters swimmers compete in, not just swim, in races with colder conditions without wetsuits. It’s practically a cottage industry in San Francisco bay.

RE: Cold water poured on ocean swim race

Sorry all. I'm really surprised. Don't know what went into that decision.
The water's never warm in Sydney at this time of year. I would have been surprised if it was any warmer than 64.

RE: Cold water poured on ocean swim race

note to self: never enter an event with a cut-off temperature > 50F.

and i thought the US was stupid about liability issues.

RE: Cold water poured on ocean swim race

Lame. 64.4 is not that cold. That's ridiculous. :bouncing:
Where were all the purists for this one? I suppose there should be some cutoff, but then they should declare it wetsuit legal. There are no records involved. :bitching:
Travel to Australia and have your event cancelled? Heck the Russian was committed and set to go, and he hadn't even shaven for the event.
I think this kind of thing is a setback for our sport. If a person swims in an 80 degree pool all the time and can't handle swimming in the cold or in a wetsuit, they should head back to the pool and quickly try to wear out their $500 speed suit. :soapbox::2cents:
