I'm wondering if anyone did this Seattle race last year and what you thought. We're thinking it could be a good excuse for our family to visit

RE: anyone do the Fat Salmon swim last year?

I've done it a few times and its a great event. It seems to get more popular every year, so don't delay on entering.

Its a point to point race along the shore with about 150 people doing each of the 3+ mile and the 1 mile races. Navigation is pretty easy.

RE: anyone do the Fat Salmon swim last year?

The Cascade Lake series is fantastic. Beautiful location with perfectly clear, clean water & the same for the air. It's put on by a fun group also & has a view of a snow topped mountain while you swim!

RE: anyone do the Fat Salmon swim last year?

Another event to consider is the Cascade Lakes Swim Series hosted by COMA in Bend, OR. I've never done it, but looks like it would be a great event. It's a series of OW swims over the weekend of 7/31-8/2.

That is a sweet looking series. That 5K on Sunday would be a killer after Fri and Sat.

RE: anyone do the Fat Salmon swim last year?

Low 70s is typical for the water temp. It's a little chilly, but I've never been tempted to wear a wetsuit--OK actually I don't own one :)

Water quality is fine. Not great visibility, but the water tastes fine. I remember someone telling me one year salmon season corresponded to the race so there were lots of boats on the lake and, consequently, they could smell/taste gas fumes at the start. This hasn't happened the years I've done it.

RE: anyone do the Fat Salmon swim last year?

both sound fun! thanks

RE: anyone do the Fat Salmon swim last year?

It's a fun race. I've done it several years now. The long race is probably a hair over 5K, I don't think it's 3.75 miles. Last year's times were a little slow due to a headwind.

I'm not a wetsuit swimmer but Fat Salmon would be the week before I'm doing a 10-mile swim in Vermont and I don't want to do anything foolish. (Of course, I just said that after saying I'm doing a 10-miler so who knows was constitutes foolish for me...)

And the general water quality? It looks like a great day from the few photos I've managed to see but I always love to hear from someone who's done it.

Thanks again.

RE: anyone do the Fat Salmon swim last year?

Is there a website? fat salmon 2008 thread - U.S. Masters Swimming Discussion Forums

Last year's results are also posted.
There is a Web site; I'll hunt around, but it's probably fatsalmon.org. No information is posted as yet on signmeup.com.

And as I recall, there is a shorter, 1-mile swim, called Chum Salmon - to distinguish it from a Fat Salmon!
