I was lucky enough to meet a writer for Outside mag a couple years ago while working out in a local pool, and he invited me on this gig:

Now I repeat the adventure every year.

the idea of a stage race has always appealed to me. i wish there had been a larger turnout though. as this was not a usms sanctioned event, i don&#39;t believe that it made it to any of the calenders. (something about only the lmsc can submit events to appear on usms calenders?)
i only heard of it from keith bell who i met last june at a 5k in cape cod.

it would be great to have a &quot;mother of all open water swims listing&quot;.

austin is a great swimming city, with year round ow opportunity (i&#39;m sure that those lakes get unbearably hot in the summer)

i will definitely do it again next year. i was so ready for an open water fix at the end of october.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Highland Lakes Challenge

Bump.

This sounds like a fun event to try.
Here is one person&#39;s experience with it.

I&#39;ll have to think about that for next year when I have some training behind me. Could be spending a lot of swim time in Texas in &#39;08!<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Highland Lakes Challenge

i have read up on that and it seems to be a warm (hot) water thing.
late october should be ok. it sucks that you share the same initials as the lake of death.:(
hey leonard, didn&#39;t you swim in the harlem river?

anyway, i am doing it. terry is too.
the idea of a five day stage race is too much to pass up.

I admit that it would be tempting if I&#39;d known about it sooner (I&#39;m in rotten shape) and if I killed my wife so I could spend the $$ to go.

Yes, I did swim in the Harlem in 2006 and I got SICK, SICK, SICK. By the thrid day, I would have welcomed death by brain amoeba.

Have a good time. Be sure to get back to us with a report on how it went - I may pencil it in for next year and start plotting to kill Deb without being caught.

Turns out that one of the lakes (Lake LBJ, oddly enough) is where that kid died recently of the brain amoeba. Yikes.
