We&#39;ve had the best ever start to our season. Bill R got in early in May on a good weekend day. Last week we swam Tuesday-Friday around 430 each day with Friday having 8 participants. Today and tomorrow we will have 4PM swims. Newport, RI visitors, if you want an early season ocean swim second beach is the place. I&#39;ve already had a 50+ minute swim without wetsuit. (and Ellen A was similarly attired.) Water temps have been variable, 58-66F. Doable.

If you want to join in, we have a facebook page, Sachuest Ocean Swimmers, and you can email me. mikegarr@usms.org.

We are now in the warmup phase. The water temps change on a pretty regular basis, and they follow the same curve yearly as the sun&#39;s height at 41N, but lag by 53 days. The average Temperature at Newport year round is 55F. If you can stand 55F you get a six month open water season: May 13 - November 13.

2007 was the warmest Ocean temps in the last 6 years at Newport.

Every year is different, and every day different, in the open water. Sachuest is a special place to swim, but even more, the folks who make it a habit, and have come to be a part of the fellowship of the open water there, have enriched my life beyond measure.

There have now been regular swims by different groups all year long. Our official season began on May 25 (two swimmers) and ended on November 7th. Pictures from both these swims are posted on the facebook page. In between, we had as many as 18 swimmers or more on the weekend swims around the point, and as many as 13 on the weekday swims. On any given weekday during the season, there may be folks swimming at 730AM, 430PM, 5PM, and 530PM. There are also rogue swimmers who go alone. We do this for fun and adventure, and the serious triathletes tend to do their own thing separate from us. Newbies are welcome. Try to get started during one of our afternoon weekday swims. No matter what, you will not be left alone during your first ocean swim. Join the facebook group or email me to become part of the email list. Feel free to contact me with questions. mikegarr@usms.org

Lots of participation, great weather, water temps mostly in the mid 70s and some really memorable swimming.
We enjoyed a first to second beach swim yesterday with 10 participatants, and most went into the Purgatory Chasm at the end of the swim, a local 8 ft wide cleft in the rocks with 8 ft water depth, and a very small gravel beach at the end.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Sachuest Beach Open Water Swims

We are planning swims at both 430 and 530 today. Weekday swims are not as well represented as they might be due to our bizarre weather this summer.
530 Wednesday was washed out on account of fog, and Wednesday 430 was marginal. The small shrimp seem to be quite reduced, and now the small jellies are blooming in spots. But hey, that&#39;s what the ocean is all about! It keeps changing. This morning we had 11 swimmers for the around the point swim; four newbies: Liz, John. Paul from NY and Diane. We buddied them up and had a good time. Plenty of wind out of the south made for more challenging conditions than usual. water was about as warm as it gets; just about everyone had wetsuits today nonetheless.

Good luck to the Save the Bay swimmers this coming weekend. Hope you meet your goals.
As usual email the list if you want to swim either at 430 or 530 any day this week.

If anyone else is not doing Save the Bay and wants to join me for a free swim of the same distance around the point Sunday morning, let me know.

Maybe now the swims can get going.
Last Saturday several of the crew did the Narrow River turnaround swim, which was alot shorter than a mile due to a drifting turnaround marker. Water was quite warm (above 70 easily) in that section. There were 110 participants overall, and fewer kids than last year. I swam 2 miles with Fred and a medium sized group on Sunday at Sand Hill Cove, where a mild Northerly had the ocean temps back down to 61F. Then all week we got into this fog and Thunderstorm pattern which wiped out most of our interest (deservedly).

The weather is setting up for a much better week next week. Let&#39;s get in some swims, and try to increase participation.
Current Newport water temperature (in the Bay) is high sixties, and I anticipate by Wednesday second beach should get near 70F in the afternoons. I am planning to get there for 430 Wednesday and Thursday, and am finally going to go without wetsuit.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Sachuest Beach Open Water Swims

We have had a slow start but the waters have finally warmed to the point where we can regularly swim. Unseasonably warm weather in Rhode Island has pushed the Newport water temp above 50F.

According to the most diehard open water swimmers this is swimmable with the right wetsuit, cap etc. I am not buying it.

But if anyone on the list wants to go let everyone know.

So we&#39;re still in &quot;Spring Training&quot; mode. I&#39;ve been trying to average a mile per day but it hasn&#39;t been practical. Had a great winter competition season and have seen Mary Phelan at practice frequently. She is swimming well, too.

Unless someone tells me otherwise there haven&#39;t been any more Sachuest beach Ocean Swims lately. (At least not from our gang.) So we wrap it up. This was the best season ever, and I&#39;m quite grateful for the group who makes it now possible for me to go swimming just about whenever I want, at the &quot;best place to swim in the world.&quot; My plan has ultimately reached its goal, a regular group of ocean swimmers at second beach. What was a lark is now a habit. Those Sunday morning first to second beach swims are etched in my mind like cases of fine wine, savored and remembered. Tuesday through Friday 430 swimmers (non-wetsuit) and 530 swimmers (wetsuit) worked very well, like a machine almost.

If you are in Rhode Island between May and October and want to swim with this group you can email MikeGarr@usms.org or send a PM via the USMS Discussion Forums. We keep a regular email list during the season.
