She was still uncomfortable being in water too deep to stand.  Also, in a previous race had suffered abuse from some of the other contestants during the swim (kicks, pushes, water waves just as the head turns to breathe, etc.)

A year is typically more than enough time to prepare for a 2.2 mile Open Water swim.  

As for the types of workouts, I would suggest that you get in contact with a local Masters swimming program and get involved with them. Last October I could barely swim one lap! By Febraury I posted my first Mile in 35 minutes. In March I did my first 3 miler in 1:41 and In May I did my first open water swim of 2 miles. Then I went on to swim the bay(4.4 miles) with everyones help on this BBB I did it.
