The fact that I've invented a piece of equipment prevents me from plugging it but I can plug other paddles. The Hans Paddle isn't new but for the price, it does exactly what it's intended to do and that is to increase the area of the hand and allow swimmers to strengthen the pull. There are a lot of great paddles out there but you can't go wrong with the Han's paddles (our high school coach has a ton and the Han's paddles allow you to adapt them for different dry-land uses. Good luck! I had two sets of TYR Mentor paddles, blue, and I broke the right hand paddle of both sets. I pushed off the wall and the paddle collapsed on itself and broke in half. This happened to me twice. I then switched to TYR Catalyst, grey (XL), and they are thicker, more solid. I prefer these over the Mentors. The XL's are big like trashcan lids.

RE: Swim Paddle Reviews?

So - those would be used in garbage sets ? ? :afraid:

RE: Swim Paddle Reviews?

Pox on all paddles.

Never had any shoulder issues with them and they've held up really well over the years.

Back in the day, mine were marked large, but I just bought a friend a pair of small yellow Catalyst Brites for Xmas and they're exactly the same size.

RE: Swim Paddle Reviews?

experienced swimmers for recommendations on effective swim paddles

The most effective paddles are the ones you grew on the ends of your wrists :agree:

RE: Swim Paddle Reviews?

I don't use swim paddles, pool bouys, or kick boards. But if your going to use paddles take it slow as you you can get a shoulder injury from them.

http://turtleswim.com/
They work sort of the opposite to normal paddles in that they give you less grip on the water, not more. I really feel the difference when I take them off after a few laps, as I've been forced to use my whole forearm to grip the water while using them.
Sort of like swimming with closed fists - your hands feel bigger and more effective immediately after and they train you to keep your elbows up.

RE: Swim Paddle Reviews?

I really like the TYR Mentor paddles. I switched from the TYR Catalyst paddles last year.

The Mentor paddles are not as stiff and unforgiving as the Catalyst. The Mentor paddles flex a bit in the hand, which feels more natural, and they have a raised center under the palm.

I suggest buying one size smaller than the brand recommends if you have any history of shoulder problems.

I used the red paddles - considered Medium by Tyr. I have fairly strong upper body strength and am 5'8 and 175 lbs.
Great information -- particularly appreciate your notes on how it performs for you and the sizing recommendation.

RE: Swim Paddle Reviews?

Maybe this will help, if you haven't seen it:
