COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A stellar field of more than 15 U.S. Olympians, including Olympic gold medalists Michael Phelps (Baltimore, Md.) Natalie Coughlin (Vallejo, Calif.), Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Calif.), Rebecca Soni (Plainsboro, N.J.) and Brendan Hansen (Havertown, Pa.) will compete at the Santa Clara International Grand Prix, June 16-19 in Santa Clara, Calif. The meet is the final stop of the seven-meet 2010-2011 USA Swimming Grand Prix Series. The meet marks the return to competition for two-time Olympian Hansen, who will compete in both the 100m and 200m breaststroke in Santa Clara. The Grand Prix meet will also feature Olympic medalists Amanda Beard (Irvine, Calif.), Eric Shanteau (Lilburn, Ga.), Dana Vollmer (Granbury, Texas) and Christine Magnuson (Tinley Park, Ill.) The full competition schedule can be found online. Finals begin at 4 p.m. PT on Thursday and at 5 p.m. PT, Friday through Sunday. Prelims begin at 9 a.m. PT, Friday through Sunday. Tickets for the meet can be purchased online here. The field of swimmers expected to compete in Santa Clara also includes a strong field of international talent, including Korea’s Park Taehwan, Canada’s Ryan Cochrane, Brazil’s Thiago Pereira, and Australia’s Nicholas D’Arcy. Americans Nathan Adrian (Bremerton, Wash.), Missy Franklin (Aurora, Ill.) Julia Smit (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.), Elizabeth Beisel (Saunderstown, R.I.), Ricky Berens (Charlotte, N.C.), and Dagny Knutson (Minot, N.D.) will also compete in Santa Clara. The top medal-winner at the conclusion of the Grand Prix Series will be awarded $20,000, courtesy of USA Swimming. Swimmers are awarded five points for a gold medal, three points for a silver medal and one point for a bronze medal. The leaderboard can be found online at usaswimming.org/grandprix. Competition footage from the meet the will be broadcast by Universal Sports and will be webcast by USA Swimming. Universal Sports will air footage from the meet LIVE on Friday, June 17 and Saturday, June 18 from 5-7 p.m. PT on its digital cable channel. USA Swimming will provide a LIVE online stream of prelims and finals throughout the four-day competition.

Brendan Hansen's returning to competition at SC this weekend! Can't wait to see the psych sheet... there's gonna be a ton of fast swimmers at this meet.

I used to go to the Santa Clara International meet each summer with my club team from Washington when I was in age group swimming. I think I was 16-17 years old at the time. Fun meet. Cool to watch the fast Olympians and National qualifiers that "normal swimmers" don't get to see, and to also be seated right with them in the bleachers.

There were plenty of others who swam poorly. How about Ryan Lochte? How about Dagny Knutson and Elizabeth Beisel? Frankly I'm not worried about any of them. I'm sure they are all in the middle of heavy training . Beisel just came off of college finals. Lochte put out a decent 200 back. He always does good at the last day of these Grand Prix meets. Wu Peng won't know what hit him at Worlds in the 200 fly when Phelps is rested.

In fact, I think you'd want all of your swimmers who are heading to World Championships to be deep in hard training right now and swimming fairly to very tired at the meet ... Missy Franklin and Chloe Sutton excepted since they both seem to be like energizer bunnies. Unless Sutton's rested, I think she'll knock out some awesome swims @ Worlds -- 16:16, 8:31 and 4:08 mid-season are awesome swims.

MP's 200 bk 27.92 57.91 (29.99) 1:27.42 (29.51) 1:57.20 (29.78) Like his 200 fr, that was a very solid 200 bk. His comment about the piano falling on his back- I'm going back to my original impression that's he's just simply exhausted from his recent training. If you account for a 2-3 week taper, he only has a month left of heavy training.

Exactly what I was thinking- very solid splits. This wasn't a swim by someone out of shape. My guess is he's working out hard. ... just read some of his comments 1:58 fly and the piano falling on his back. Now I'm no too sure about the guy. I'm afraid I have to agree with you there. I've been watching the excuses since last summer. I'm afraid the fame has gotten to him..He may not be able to put together a lifestyle anymore that would include serious training. I'll wait to stick a fork in him until after worlds but I'm afraid he may be done.

Phelps did have the fastest final 50 in the field last night: 6 Phelps, Michael 25 North Baltimore- 1:51.04 1:49.89 WCB 25.96 54.16 (28.20) 1:22.09 (27.93) 1:49.89 (27.80) Looking at smart splits like those, even though it's a slow race by his standards, I don't see a reason to panic. Phelps is clearly not at his best right now, but it shows something from him to be swimming meets right now. He probably realizes he needs to get some racing in, even if it means there will be lots of media questioning his performance. I'm very confident he'll be where he needs to be when it really matters.

It seems like a fair number of elite swimmers are unattached (e.g., Allison Schmitt, Kathleen Hersey, Ricky Berens, Dwyer, etc.). Is there a lot of club switching going on pre-Olympics or does it have something to do with swimmers coming out of NCAA programs and having to re-affiliate with a USAS team? The women's 100 fly A final was the randomly selected Wendy's $1000 race. Vollmer blew it out, very impressive. Justine Mueller swam the 400 IM three times yesterday, once in prelims, once in a swim-off to make C finals and then the C final. Lots of swimmers and coaches were coming up to her and complimenting her on that.

Wow, yet another sad Race for Phelps:cane: guess he was playn a little more than I thought.... What were the final results? They are still not posted on the website, yet. Everything but the men's 200 free has been posted.

Nice swim by an "old guy!" 800 free 4 Monasterio, Ric 32 Davie Nadadores- 8:15.82 8:13.61 NAT I saw him swim an 8:16 last year in Gothenburg for a new World Record in the 30-34 age group.
