Causes?

Athletes bring illness from home. Just meeting people from other nations and shaking their hands can cause problems I was sicker then I have ever been in Melbourne.

Change in food cosumption. The food types and the food providers. I have even got sick eating fast food (Jack in the Box) in the USA.

RE: Illness from pool at Commonwealth Games

Does anyone else sense a little racism in this whole story?

Despite India’s reputation for turning out computer whizzes at a record rate, it’s still a very backward country

Brundage

I've traveled to India and New Dehli, in particular, yearly since 2003, both for business and some pleasure. I can't comment on the particular issues going on right now @ the Commonwealth Games, but, even though I'm very careful with respect to where I eat and what I eat when I'm there, I get some gastric distress every trip, ranging from mild to severe. I'm typically pretty iron-stomached, but this experience has also been repeated when I've traveled in parts of Africa and South America. Part of this is going to happen in almost any environment where the combination of time zone changes, travel stress and relatively significant dietary changes exist. Having said that, the sanitation problems do sound dreadful and can't be helping out.

RE: Illness from pool at Commonwealth Games

Ian Thorpe's comment in a BBC story that it could be something in the environment (on the deck, in the locker rooms) rather than in the water itself seems reasonable.

Yuck. :eek::eeew:

Overflowing sewage in the swim facility restrooms? Pigeon droppings? Gaah!

I'm bemused by another's comment that "we expected a certain level of illness coming into this environment." Apparently, knocking out a quarter of the swimmers is below the level expected.

RE: Illness from pool at Commonwealth Games

www.thisislondon.co.uk/.../article-23885733-delhi-belly-hits-england-team-as-swimming-pool-becomes-infected.do

A similar thing happened earlier this year at men's NCAAs. The meet was actually delayed one day due to so many athletes being ill. I believe norovirus was the culprit there, and I wouldn't be surprised to hear that it's also the problem in New Delhi.

RE: Illness from pool at Commonwealth Games

It’s no surprise at all that something like that happened in India.

Despite India’s reputation for turning out computer whizzes at a record rate, it’s still a very backward country and their sanitation is still in the dark ages:

The question now is was it the tikka masala or the aloo gobi? :)

Does anyone else sense a little racism in this whole story? Yeah, I know India has some sanitation issues, but if this kind of thing happened anywhere else people wouldn't be reacting the same way. As I noted earlier, there was a similar situation in Columbus at this year's NCAA meet but I didn't hear lot of folks saying it was because people at Ohio state are filthy. OK, maybe the University of Michigan swimmers did!
