It will be interesting to know how many different goggles one uses. Maybe some are for lap swim, some are for open water, some are for race? Several of the reviewers said the goggles didn't leave marks, however, these are leaving the worst marks ever and making the dark circles under my eyes worse. I love the visibility and comfort of these goggles, but the (excellent!) suction is working too well, even when I keep the strap very loose and try to keep the suction loose. Swimming increases the water presssure to on the goggles; especially when I do SDK drills.

Does anybody have a suggestion for this? I have tried applying Vaseline around my eyes before I use my goggles, but my eyes still look like I've been beaten up after a swim workout. I would love to find a solution, because these are the most comfortable goggles I've found yet:

I will warn you - they'll stretch, you can tighten them, they'll be fine. Then one day they just kind of break. So always have a spare on hand. Unless you have time to clip off some of the excess from the strap and make a new nose bridge.

They're like lithium ion batteries - they generate 99.999% of their max power until suddenly they're just dead. (As opposed to nickel cadmium batteries which I believe start @ 100% and gradually lose their ability to generate power (so a gradually declining slope).)

Good to know. I'll see how these hold up. If any piece of gear starts becoming high maintenance, it gets replaced pronto, but hopefully these will last me a good long while.

RE: How many *different* goggles do you use?

I picked up a pair of the socket rockets the other day. All are on bungees because not only are the factory-supplied straps hard to adjust when wet, my shaky hands make the job even more frustrating. Herb, try Ande's tip on keeping your goggles clear for a race: Put a dab of baby shampoo in your goggles, then rinse. I'm sure there must be equal or better goggles around but every single other goggle I have ever tried has leaked so I'm never going to switch. Someone suggested keeping goggles in a container with water and a dollop of chlorine removal shampoo between practices. I've been doing that with mine, and they have held up much longer than my last pair did, and have a tendency to fog less. I forget who mentioned it, but great advice, thank you!

RE: How many *different* goggles do you use?

Someone suggested keeping goggles in a container with water and a dollop of chlorine removal shampoo between practices.

I remember that post, too. I wonder if soaking it in the shampoo/soap all the time might speed the deterioration of the gasket (silicone or otherwise)?

RE: How many *different* goggles do you use?

Just one pair

Yes I use them for practice and meets and I will tighten them for meets and then just leave them tight until the next meet when I may tighten them again. Somehow though I always seem to have enough strap left.

I do carry a spare pair just in case.

Ah, relieved to find another "one pair of goggles" person! Just bought a new pair of Kaiman Aquasphere--a friend recommended and lent me a pair for an open water swim I did in July, and I loved them! They were more than I usually spend for goggles, so I may also pick up a pair of Hydrospex for mainly pool use to replace the ones that I have now that are very, very beat up. That way, I figure both pairs will last longer. I like the Hydrospex pretty much, and they've been comfortable, but I was really glad to have the Aquasphere for my long swim.

RE: How many *different* goggles do you use?

Why not use comfortable goggles for all occasions, since the speed effect from the shape of the goggles is negligible?

I like the Sweedes for racing, they're the only ones that consistently stay on when I dive in. I was using them for practice, but then I met with my optometrist who convinced me to stop swimming with my contact lenses in because of the risk of bacteria getting behind the lenses. (I still compete with lenses, because I hate walking blind around the pool deck and carrying my glasses to the starting block.)

So I switched back to prescription. I used to have a pair of TYR femme 'scripts, and I LOVED THEM. But I gave them away in a moment of foolishness. I can't find them anywhere now, and the regular TYR prescription goggles are hurting like the devil after 1000 yards or so. I think I'll try the Speedo 'scripts, because I used the same mirrored kind for lake swimming this summer, and they were comfy.

So my plea here is for Sweedes to make a prescrition lens. OMG what a great day that would be. :)

RE: How many *different* goggles do you use?

I'm always trying new gear. The Aquasphere Kayenne Lady goggles are good for that, as well. They don't leave marks the way the TYR Femme Petite goggles do. I took your advice and bought the TYR goggles for meets (and they are perfect for that purpose), but they become quite uncomfortable during long practice swims. The Aquasphere Kayenne's are much softer and have a molded nosepiece. The visibility is also much better and they adjust very quickly and easily, without having to take them off. They are not cheap (only $1 cheaper than my new Speedo), but they were well worth the price! :applaud:

I do carry a spare pair just in case.

RE: How many *different* goggles do you use?

I have 5 different pairs of goggles, across 3 different styles

Speedo GCG Plus Mirrorized - Black/Gold
Speedo GCG Plus Mirrorized - Red
Speedo Speed Socket Mirrored -- 2 pairs
Some cheapo pair of Speedo goggles w/no mirroring

I generally keep 1 pair of Speed Sockets aside for meets and then rotate the others around. Once the meet pair is sufficiently used, it goes into practice rotation. I prefer the GCG Plus for open water as they are more comfortable for longer swims. I use the cheapo pair often for morning swims in the dark.
