I swam with this group at Belmont while I was in Huntington Beach with my grandma for Mother's Day. They are FABULOUS, FUN, and they swim open water as well. It took me about 15 minutes to get to Belmont from HB in the morning, so Irvine would be a little further. Let's hope that there are no great whites close to the OC coast this week! I plan on swimming/bodysurfing where there are lifeguards and avoiding dawn and dusk just to be careful.

I'd have to agree with Ahelee on this one. As a native from Long Beach who grew up body surfing before learning how to swim properly, who lived in San Diego most of my life and kayak surfed, and a (former) SCUBA diver, the ocean is my friend. But, there are times when the critters in it should be respected (and feared). When in doubt, always check with the lifeguards about the water conditions, and always let them know your swim plan. Give California a big :smooch: for me! And, have fun! :D

Am I thinking of La Jolla Shores? There were no attacks in the cove, but I thought I remembered hearing about attacks in the waters out from the cove. I lived in San Diego from 1984 - 2004 and remembered hearing about attacks during that period and after I left. Didn't a swimmer die from an attack? Perhaps it was north of the cove... Solana Beach - North County... Very random and unusual. A single attack. Pretty sure the locals have appreciated the scare media in a weird way. The beaches were beginning to get very crowded in the summer! La Jolla Shores is across from La Jolla Cove. Lots of rays and sand sharks there. But no worries for swimmers up on the surface.

Sorry Elaine... no shark attacks in The Cove. Women in bikinis however have been harmlessly followed by a fishy smelling seal. Am I thinking of La Jolla Shores? There were no attacks in the cove, but I thought I remembered hearing about attacks in the waters out from the cove. Just watch out for the sharks! They are known to frequent that area, because of the abundance of seals. And, there have been attacks... :afraid: Sorry Elaine... no shark attacks in The Cove. Women in bikinis however have been harmlessly followed by a fishy smelling seal.

I've covered myself in bloody steaks and started swimming about 4-5 miles off the coast... They'll find me.. but they'll never catch me! I'm a Masters Swimmer!

I am attending the Pan-Pacs next week and I would love to get in some swimming of my own. I know NOVA has a great program there for a pool possibility. Can anyone recommend good options for ocean swims? Is the Corona Del Mar State Beach as good as any? Thanks. Karen - This is the open water group that trains around Orange County. groups.google.com/.../ocopenwaterswims Lots of varied abilities and swim times. They have a bunch training right now to swim 2 relays across The Catalina Channel on August 22.
