WOW! Lochte and Soni were sooo close to beating the WR... Maybe next time :) Kita was also amazing, I wouldn't be surprised if he managed to break the WR in a foreseeable future.

If you have one window open to Omega Timing's almost live tracker, you've got the lane assignments and can mute Mel altogether. I've liked a number of Mel's Gold Medal segments, but he really, really shouldn't be doing live commentary.

As well, we know that having only the two top Americans (and often Australians) in the 'A' finals leaves out potentially some very fast swimmers from those finals, but how is that worse than the Olympics where you only get to ENTER two swimmers? I suspect the top 2 from trials wouldn't like it,but it would be an intriguing format for the Olympics.In a rational world there would be an Olympic qualifying time and if you made it you would be in regardless of nationality.Also at the Olympics there would be prelims and finals only.

Why did Phelps get DQ'd in the 200 IM? I forgot to watch prelims today He wasn't DQed, he withdrew, saying he didn't feel fit enough to do the prelim and final 200IM and then the relay.

Does anyone know the schedule for Saturday? On the website it says the prelims start at 10am but on the Heat Sheet it shows that the first race isn't until 11:19am.

The format in the Pan Pacs is an advantage to the US; it favors deep teams. Think about it. If one of the top two from nationals happens to have an off meet or event, then there is someone who is (for all intents and purposes) just as fast to step into the gap. It is like using the prelims as a mini-selection meet. Plus it adds some heat to the prelims. I like this format.

I had no idea it was Mel Stewart. This is especially weird since his observations about flyers have seemed particularly odd (e.g. calling Phelps a "flat" flyer... HUH?!? Dude rides a huge sine wave!!! (with admittedly slower turnover than other elite flyers)) Overall this makes no sense so I need to :bed:

I think it's in meet management handbooks internationally that an event cannot be considered to be official if they don't slip both Final Countdown and Eye of the Tiger in the set lists at some point in the competition.

Okay, it is Mel Stewart doing the internet broadcast (Gold Medal Mel). I am getting tired of him cackling in triumph when a US swimmer is doing well (very often), then getting times and finishes wrong. Also, is it asking too much for him to look over the finals for pronunciation assistance before he wings it live (Korean, Chinese and Spanish names a special adventure). As well, we know that having only the two top Americans (and often Australians) in the 'A' finals leaves out potentially some very fast swimmers from those finals, but how is that worse than the Olympics where you only get to ENTER two swimmers? Anyhow, watching live on the internet has been awesome and the swimming has been terrific.

Between US Nationals and Pan Pacs, I've lost count of how many times the swimnetwork.com guy has completely lost it. "WHOA DID YOU SEE THAT?!?!? HAHAHAHAHAH!!!" Tonight I've only caught a couple races but he's badly misread times twice - he yelled "56!!!" at the end of the women's 100 fly consol, and then corrected himself "58.26." He did it again in the women's 200 back consol, exclaiming "2:05... er, 2:08.05." These are non-trivial differences. She was 4:10-low on the last 400 of her 800, so I would think she would go a little faster than 4:08, even as a prelim swim. History has shown that attempting to be logical with Kate Ziegler's split times is a futile exercise. When she broke the 1500 world record in 2007 she was faster on the 800 split than she was in the individual 800 just two days prior at the same meet. She is one of those swimmers that can go close to full speed at rhythm and just maintain it. One of the issues for her in 2008 was shortening of her stroke trying to get the speed for the 400 and down to the 200 for a spot on the relay. That in turn may have hurt her in the longer distances where she really needed that longer stroke for pacing it to the rhythm best suited for her. I think she should just focus on the 800 (and 1500 for worlds) and look at the 400 as a bonus.
