Hey Jim here is a real life example from the suburbs of NYC:

4:45 wake up and drink coffee and read newspaper on line (important for job to do before arriving)
5:20 walk dogs and feed them
5:45 leave for pool
6:05 swim
7:25 out of pool, shower, dress for work
7:50 leave gym and drive to work
8:15 traffic jam and start to worry
9:05 park car and dash to office

It helps to be a morning person but when I retire which is soon, I bet I will swim much later in the AM!

RE: Does swimming make you happier?

would be a lot happier if the beauty in the next lane would go for a coffee and donut and a chat

RE: Does swimming make you happier?

Almost anytime that I'm in the water I feel better when I leave !:D

RE: Does swimming make you happier?

I still don't get why so many people get up to swim that early, though. Basically the early morning is the only time that my swimming doesn't mess up our family schedule. I get up for a 5 am practice because by the end of the day, when I get home from work at close to 6 pm, make dinner (my job about 90% of the time) I don't want to go out and practice at 7 pm or 8 pm, when we try to make time for the boys (7 and 11) before they go lights out (reading, games, etc). And the morning routine is pretty full - up at 4:30, in the pool at 5, out and showered and home by about 7. Then its walk the dog, breakfast and get ready for work/school. My wife leaves at 7:30 for work and I take the kids to school at 8:15 and then cart myself to work from there. Plus, my workout is much better in the early morning - at my advanced age - then late in the evening. And I'd say swimming makes me happier in spite of the odd hours I keep to make it all fit.

RE: Does swimming make you happier?

Swimming does make me happier, short and long term, but there's no way I'm slogging thru that survey.

I would gladly get up that early to swim before going to work, but no pool opens that early around here. Sure it does- they become spiteful, hate getting their hair wet and need hot water when they workout. Ha Ha Ha! That's for sure, especially in my case! Those noodlers made my life a living hell! And, I truly believe that a big part of it was exactly what you stated. I think they resent the fact that I'm younger, more athletic, can actually swim, and, worse yet, can swim butterfly. I really think I was the victim of their insecurities, jealousy, and resentment. Even still, swimming DOES make me happier! :bliss: There is no way I'm letting the noodlers get me down!

RE: Does swimming make you happier?

An interesting addition to the test would be to see if noodling has an opposite effect on wellbeing than swimming.

Kids: If my wife and I need to get kids off to school, the prime time to get a workout in is between about 5am and 6:30/6:45am.
Global workforce: My colleagues and clients are global ... 7am conference calls are common, 5am conference calls are not unheard of, as are times at the other end of the day. Sometimes those early calls offer a benefit of being able to slip out for a midday workout, but sometimes not. Although some industries are ahead of the globalized workforce curve (e.g., IT) and some industries will likely always be immune (e.g., hairstylists), I think odder and odder work hours are the wave of the future.

RE: Does swimming make you happier?

On the subject of the emotional aspect of swimming, I ran across this video featuring the North Bay Aquatics (based in Corte Madera in Marin County north of San Francisco) and their experience with “Swimmer’s High”:
