Then, when she's on the blocks, instead of yelling and cavorting like most parents, I calmly tell her to "swim like the wind." We both know that it makes no sense but sometimes the perplexed looks from the timers make it worthwhile.

One last superstition, I'm not allowed to look at the clock until she hits the wall. Sometimes I have to tilt my hat to keep it from being visible but you do what you have to do.

I haven't done my first masters meet yet but I'm expecting her to follow all of the same rituals for me.

RE: Swim Faster Faster Quotes

"It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog."

I know this one doesn't necessarily have the right message throughout the song, but Cake's Going the Distance" is just an awesome song to play when you're on the blocks.

YouTube- CAKE - The Distance (Official Music Video)

Reluctantly crouched at the starting line,
Engines pumping and thumping in time.
The green light flashes, the flags goes up,
Churning and burning, they yearn for the cup.

They deftly maneuver and muscle for rank,
Fuel burning fast on an empty tank,
Reckless and wild they pour through the turns,
Their prowess is potent and secretly stern.

As they speed through the finish the flags go down.
The fans get up, and get out of town.
The arena is empty except for one man,
Still driving and striving as fast as he can

The sun has gone down and the moon has come up,
And long ago somebody left with the cup,
But he's driving and striving and hugging the turns,
And thinking of someone for whom he still burns.

He's going the distance.
He's going for speed.
She's all alone, all alone in her time of need.

Because he's racing and pacing and plotting the course,
He's fighting and biting and riding on his horse.
He's going the distance.

Yeah!

No trophy, no flowers, no flash bulbs, no wine.
He's haunted by something he cannot define.
Bowel shaking earthquakes of doubt and remorse,
Assail him, impale him with monster truck force.
In his mind he's still driving, still making the grade.
She's hoping time that her memories will fade,
Cause he's racing and pacing and plotting the course,
He's fighting and biting and riding on his horse.

The sun has gone down and the moon has come up,
And long ago somebody left with the cup.
But he's striving and driving and hugging the turns,

I have always thought that this is a Woody Hayes quote (long time OSU football coach) but I did a little web searching to check the source and found this site:
www.scribd.com/.../the-will-to-win-is-not-nearly-as-important-as-the-will-to-prepare-to-win

attributing it to Wooden, this site:
successnet.org/.../angier-preparetowin.htm

attributing it to Bobby Knight, and this site:

The following was in an email sent by Chuck Wielgus and forwarded to me by Ted Haartz. Good stuff.

SOME WORDS OF WISDOM FROM COACH JOHN WOODEN

"Never mistake activity for achievement"

"Be more concerned with your character than with your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think of you".

"Be Prepared and Be Honest".

"You can't let praise or criticism get to you. It's a weakness to get caught up in either one."

"You can't live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you."

"A Coach is someone who can give correction without causing resentment."

"If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?"

"If you're not making mistakes, then you're not doing anything. I'm positive a doer makes mistakes."

"Failure is not fatal, but failure to change might be."

"Things turn out the best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out."

"Consider the rights of others before your own feelings and the feelings of others before your own rights"

"Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do."

"Don't measure yourself by what you have accomplished, but by what you should have accomplished with your ability."

"It's not so important who gets to start the game, but who finishes it."

"It's the little details that are vital. Little things make big things happen."

"Talent is god-given. Be Humble. Fame is man-given. Be grateful. Conceit is self-given. Be Careful."

"The main ingredient of stardom is the rest of the team."

RE: Swim Faster Faster Quotes

If you don't know where you are going you will end up somewhere else.

Being part of the cap clique doesn't do much for me.

Each person has their own goals, plans, motivations, & reasons.
Tap into that!

That is a good motivator. Maybe Masters teams should have similar motivators. I know adult motivation comes from within, certainly mine, but outside influences still get in the head of us "grown ups".

I think this would be good. If you don't make a certain practice times your coach thinks you should, you can't wear the team's cap in meets.

RE: Swim Faster Faster Quotes

I tried your goggle trick with the 2 caps at my first meet, last month, and it worked great! My goggles didn't budge. One guy DIDN'T wear a cap, flooded his goggles, and had to roll over to fix them, right in the middle of his race. Too bad, because he looked like a good, strong swimmer, otherwise. He should have read your tips!

Concerning two caps, what is the tip? I have goggle trouble.

Sorry about that; I should have elaborated for the benefit of those who missed Ande's tip!

Ande recommends wearing a second cap OVER the goggles, so the strap is secure and won't slip. In addition, he recommends pulling the cap down over the top of the goggles, if the goggles aren't a streamlined racing model.

During the start, it is also important to tuck your chin and keep your arms tight against your ears when you enter the water.

After starting a forum thread soliciting advice for my goggles, I received a lot of great advice, put it to use at my first Masters meet, and had no problems at all! :agree:

RE: Swim Faster Faster Quotes

I tried your goggle trick with the 2 caps at my first meet, last month, and it worked great! I have goggle trouble.

RE: Swim Faster Faster Quotes

my 2008 time was 21.4.Just referenced the USMS book to find that's just 3/10ths shy of the record that year which still stands today, and furthermore is held by J Smith.

This makes me think of an appropriate but more general quote (I'll try not to butcher it too much) "Whatever you work hard at and measure will improve"

RE: Swim Faster Faster Quotes

One thing that really motivated me to improve in 2008, was a 2007 conversation I had with my former UT teammate John Smith.
We were talking about the 2008 SCY Masters Nationals in Austin.

John said to me: "Raz you can always bust a 50!"
(he meant that he expected me to be able to swim a pretty fast 50 free)
(in 2007 I went 22.3 in the 50 free and at the time I had a few doubts)

After that conversation, I shifted my training to bust a decent 50 at Nats
my 2007 time was 22.3 & I worked on it & improved, my 2008 time was 21.4.
