Way too cumbersome. I say bring back the suits and get over it. But if they don't, then deal with the consequences: slower times. I think swimming made a mistake, but most of us will continue to swim and compete no matter what the rules.

RE: New proposal for dealing with world records

Yes, and moving forward I would like the individual results database on the USMS website to be modified so that it is made clear that I am not getting older and slower, I am just wearing a different suit.

RE: New proposal for dealing with world records

What happened to the simple asterisk?

The logic of what they're proposing means that FINA Masters records should be reconsidered as well.
Maybe they like confusion.

RE: New proposal for dealing with world records

Would it not be easier to erase all records after Dec 2007 and not have the times even recorded. Or set up a new system not FINA, call it CSWR (Cheating Swimmers Wearing Rubbersuits) and record all those records from Jan 2008. Let Fina record the records once they really decide what is legal.

RE: New proposal for dealing with world records

This turns the record book into a joke, IMO.

Well...I think it was already a joke, but I digress.

Records are nice but I think swimmers race to win. The value of an Olympic or World Championship gold medal is the same whether or not a WR was broken when it was earned.

But aren't there financial incentives to breaking a WR? If so, this isn't a trivial matter.

RE: New proposal for dealing with world records

This quote killed me:

This turns the record book into a joke, IMO.

I'm with you. Do we now need lines for ...

when the 15 meter was/wasn't enforced,
when the touch was/wasn't required on a backstroke turn,
when you had to keep your head above water on breaststroke,
when rubber speed caps were introduced,
etc.
etc.

There have been so many innovations and rule changes along the way that affected speed that it would be a very messy record book indeed.

What's more sad about all of this is seeing a great guy like Phil Whitten associated with Craig Lord. :afraid:

RE: New proposal for dealing with world records

I think this is patently ridiculous.
