So, have identified that I will compete in FY2010 and practice is going well. But, I don't know all the new flipturns or starts. So much has changed since I last swam:confused: At any rate, some of my team mates are willing to work with me,

RE: Flip Turns and Starts

Best resource right here www.goswim.tv/.../starts-turns.html

They have instructionals. Has anyone purchased any of their dvds?

RE: Flip Turns and Starts

Hey - thanks for the advice. What I meant more specifically, are the new starts off the blocks and also the new backstroke flip turns. Will check out the videos - but agree that one on one help might be best. Plan on hitting up some of the my team mates for that and the coach.

Thanks again!

Sharon,

Not sure what you mean by 'new starts off the blocks', by that do you mean that you are unsure how as you have never used blocks before?

For the backstroke turn, don't let it scare you. The backstroke flip turn is just a freestyle flip turn with a couple of restrictions.

1 - As you approach the wall, you are allowed to turn over to your stomach.
2 - After turning to your stomach, you are allowed to take one single-arm or double-arm pull (I recommend a single-arm pull)
3 - After completing the arm pull (generally indicated by your pull hand or hands reaching your hip) - you must intiate the turning action
4 - You can complete the flip in any manner you desire but you must be on your back when your feet leave the wall.
5 - The entire turn must be one continuous motion. At no point can you just glide or even just kick.
6 - When any part of your body touches the wall, the continuous motion requirement for the turn is satisfied.

Hope that helps

RE: Flip Turns and Starts

Videos are great, but I'm a big fan of one-on-one. I'd be more prone to find a coach willing to spare me a few minutes before/after practice, or a fellow swimmer who is willing to spare a few pointers. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery for sure, but imitating video only goes so far. Water is a full 360 degree experience, as well all know and love...and I've seen people who think they're swimming straight only to witness them zig-zagging around the lane lines like an angry bee. Videos would be a good starting point, but absolutely nothing can take the place of a good 20-30 minute session with someone who can watch you and offer advice on corrections you can make as you're practicing.

RE: Flip Turns and Starts

The problem I have with those goswim videos is my computer. It takes about 10 min to get a 30 second video to play. I don't know if it's my service or computer.

What I have been doing for turns, and I think it might be working, is flip on the wall - SDK - surface for one stroke - turn with no wall - several strokes to wall - repeat. I do it about 20 times.

I haven't dived yet, I'll save that for later

RE: Flip Turns and Starts

Beat me to it! :D

You must swim fast and of course have a very fast index finger on the mouse.

RE: Flip Turns and Starts

Best resource right here www.goswim.tv/.../starts-turns.html

RE: Flip Turns and Starts

Best resource rigt here www.goswim.tv/.../starts-turns.html

I guess it depends on when your fiscal year starts? Are you a calendar year reporter? LOL.

Any way, a good sight with drills on turns and starts is goswim.tv http://www.goswim.tv/ More specifically: www.goswim.tv/.../starts-turns.html

Good luck!
