Would not be surprised to see the 1500 mark go down in prelims. You can't compare the 800 times to last year - nobody swam a fast 800. It was obvious that both would go under 7:38 -- they were both faster than Hackett in the 400 and they are both good milers. I think Meloulli won in about 7:45 in 2007 - and his 1500 time got much better in 2008. Easy on Ous M -- I don't think they would have banned Phelps for 2 years if they would have tested him in November or December after his pipe smoking.

Gosh, Davies from England and that Yuri are still going strong in the distance events. Of course, they aren't in the top 3 but they are still making it back to finals. Does anyone know why Davies didn't do the open water events. He got second at Beijing in Open water. Just wondering. Ous Melluoni was only able to swim at Beijing because they lifted his positive drug testing early so he could compete in Beijing. Of course, FINA would never do that for an American. If the suspension was properly served, Hackkett should have gotten his 3rd gold medal in the 1500 at Beijing. Here is the link about it. www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/.../14584.asp

mellouli went 7:52 last year, zhang went 7:53... 17 and 21 second drops respectively... i guess they both just worked really hard this last year, huh? Things that make you go hmmmm? Yes the 1500 record is getting erased for sure. At an average of 28 seconds per 50...the new record should easily be under the 14:30 mark. Maybe in the low 20's as you suggested Kirk. That's just nuts.

If he had that much left in the tank on the last 50 and had the energy to turn on that MONSTER kick (reminiscent of watching Thorpe turn it on vs Hackett in Aus nationals way back), he should be able to go much faster, right? I don't like seeing Hackett erased, but the 1500m record looks like it will be smashed.

Hackett would have hung with them to the half way mark. They just tore it up from that point on. What kind of times have they posted prior to today? They're either not getting fatigued because of suit assistance...or these guys are just in a different league.

I don't know - I am past the actual time comparisons to records....watch the racing, watch how the competition is doing -- but the times are what they are ... They totally crushed the field and it was a good race. Both of them will do battle in the 1500 - it should be a great showdown. Ous M. may end of with 3 silvers for the meet going down to guys with monster last 50s.

He split 7:53 in finals. The 7:48 was his prelim split. Fina must have missed that one in the rankings. results.beijing2008.cn/.../SWM015905.shtml okay. still though, that's a 16 second drop in just under a year... out. of. control. and now i'm going back to lurking... :wave:

are you sure about that? the 7:53 i pulled is from the 2008 rankings on fina's website... same with mellouli's 7:52. and both are listed as from beijing... He split 7:53 in finals. Those are deceptive, though, because neither probably swam a remotely rested 800 last year. Looking at the all-time list, Zhang is listed at a 7:48 from Beijing last year, so presumably that was a split from his Olympic 1500. are you sure about that? the 7:53 i pulled is from the 2008 rankings on fina's website... same with mellouli's 7:52. and both are listed as from beijing...

Even close to 14:20 is a possibility, as crazy as that sounds. I'm going to guess Zhang wins in 14:24. I know ehoch doesn't care about times, but I can't help but make a prediction :)

His splits were 3:46.79, 3:45.33. His final 200 was 1:51.76. Looking at the FINA master world records, no swimmer has ever even been under 4:00 for a 400 free or under 1:52 for a 200 free (unless someone did it this summer).
