Not all OW events have one event registration. Each LMSC sets its own prices and policies.

For example, the 2.4 mile Madison (Wisconsin) Open Water Swim offers a OEVT @ $18. Big Shoulders (Illinois) requires a full USMS registration; for an Illinois registration, it's $35 or $20 after Sept. 1st. Michigan charges $14 for its OEVT.

RE: One event registration

The OW events I've seen where they allow single day membership will collect the fee up front as registration. I have no idea what they do with the money thereafter. This is a good question you have posed, will be interesting to see the responses.
