I live just outside Milan - 400 IM is my event and I could do up to 10 a year if I wanted but generally only 3 or 4 - it hurts !!
perhaps in the past it was like what you describe , I am on the circuit for the last 9 years and with the growth of the Ironmaster (complete all events) , each meet will have some onlger events . Obviously it is not for everyone and the 50's and 100's are always the most popular .
Meets tend to last just 1 day - keeps costs down and families together !!

Ireland has a growing Masters movement , many compete in England , Wales and Scotland too . However it is very concentrated in the Dublin and Cork areas and has strong ties with open water swimming and waterpolo which are very popular .

RE: Masters swimming more Popular in Italy ?

what a question !
Well even I'm surprised at how many swimmers smoke - and lots of good guys too . I'm even more surpried at how much they drink and that comes from me a "paddy" !

RE: Masters swimming more Popular in Italy ?

Is it true or not about many swimmers smoking between events?

RE: Masters swimming more Popular in Italy ?

Results are here :

along with other years .

Wouldn't agree that only sprints at meets - there is good variety . overall the Italian masters movement is very popular and with a good level . Very socail too and good lunches or dinners are an important part of the weekend at competitions .

what part of italy are you in ? i lived in desenzano del garda.(where they have a great outdoor 50 m, and 2 indoor 25m pools. in comparison with the american masters meets where i lived in florida, they are shorter( we often have 2 to 3 day meets). now , i live in georgia and it is different. less meets. but always a 200im. how many times have you seen a 400Im at an local italian meet? maybe things are changing since i moved back to the states.

how big is masters in the emerland isle?

RE: Masters swimming more Popular in Italy ?

Results are here :

the guy setting all the records alberto montini is an ex national swimmer for Italy in the 80's. he just set one in the 200 br.
meets often start after 12pm so if you are a morning swimmer like me, you aren't up for your events.
the give great prizes though- trophies big ones. and of course food, food, food.

RE: Masters swimming more Popular in Italy ?

What is the variance between the mean and median distance traveled for our typical Nationals competitor?

I would say your comparison is invalid. My LMSC is larger than Italy with 2/5ths the population. Expand that out to the nation, and travel is a barrier to attendance in the US that it would not be in Italy.

Master's swimming may be more popular in Italy, but I don't think comparing the size of National's is valid. How about Membership/population?
