It was really cool to see a 30 year old in the final heat of the 800, Ricardo Monasterio. Last year, he was ranking 17th in the 800 LCM and 65th in the 1500 LCM according to the SWIMS Database. It just goes to show you that 30 somethings can be competitive in the distance events.

Phelps' 100 free looked terrible going back and forth between recovery styles. Having said that, he managed to come in second. Yeah, it's like he was trying to be a "real sprinter" by emulating a popular sprint style even though he wasn't comfortable with it.

Watching it again, I think he has to be encouraged. 1) Middle of training 2) after a 6 month training break 3) not suited up 4) switching technique several times MID-RACE 5) not shaved and he went 49.04 For the sake of reference, he went 23.31/24.2 for a 47.51 in the relay in China, breathing every stroke using his "loping" style. Tonight he went 23.82/25.22 for 49.04 Obviously it is tough to tell if he is getting faster since he is just 3 months into this after a huge layoff, but it is clear from those splits he still has his endurance (although not quite where it was in China). He had the fastest 2nd 50 by .17 over fred, .56 over Berens and a second+ faster than most of the others. From my point of view, he has to find some way to get that opening 50 right at or just under 23.0 because..... Bousquet was 22.33/24.8 when he went 47.10 Bernard was 22.35/24.59 when he went 46.94 Sullivan was 22.48/24.76 when he went 47.24 Sullivan was 22.44/24.61 when he went 47.05 So just needs to get out faster, maybe a target split for him would be 23.0/23.9 or 22.9/23.9.... But he has to have more speed going out or he has no chance, no matter what style of stroke he's using.

Just watched the 100 meter final online and Phelps certainly swam a strange race. Seemed to mix straight-arm with his regular stroke in both 50s. Still came in a strong second, and certainly has tried a few different things this weekend. Can't wait for the next meet!

One of the most impressive swims I've seen the results that nobody mentioned is Eric Shanteau's 200 ***. He annihilated the field by almost 5 seconds and went 2:09.

Phelps was beaten in the 100 back. But, the press is already treating like he was beaten in the 200 fly or something. Phelps had a good swim against Peirsol. When Phelps gets beated in his best events(if he swims them tapered), then the press can say that he was beaten. Phelps doesn't have to prove anything anymore. He is experimenting and non-Phelps like events.

in 200m free nearly all the swimmers swim "looping" not like michael but very close. Michael surprise with his finish with straight arms... a preview for tomorrow.

Since this was the prelims of the Ultra swim and not the olympics, wouldn't expect him to be close to his lifetime bests or even really push the morning swims, since he doesn't have to do so. Right, I'm just curios to see how it turned out tonight. He went 1:46 which is pretty good all things considered.

Saw Ian Clark swim a great 400IM. I saw swim the 200 back in person two weeks ago. I think that he did a 4:34 in the 400 IM two weeks ago. Someone needs to tell Rowdy not everyone swims well at Suburban. Maybe today they do, but when I was at Suburban, I didn't swim that well. I swam meagerly ok!!!

Nice job of Rob. Why he didn't swim in Clovis? I saw him in Clovis, was wondering if he would swim. He swam the 50 in clovis. He told me at zones that he would be in florida, at the new headquarters and for some other meetings. His travel plans, according to Rob, would make it difficult to clovis to swim before sunday.

Phelps was a good 8 seconds slower that the olympics in the 200, and 3 slower in the 100 fly. Interesting to see what he goes tonight in finals. Does anyone know if the big guns are rested for this meet, or are they gearing solely for Nationals in July?
