The chlorine is really doing my hair in. And I've tried it all...Always rinsing hair before getting in water and putting a conditioner on before. Also, I always wash with chlorine removing shampoo afterwards...

But seriously though, I have a problem after a very extended absence from the pool. I've let my hair grow out, and now I can't figure out how to get my hippie hair all IN the swim cap. I tried to swim today, but had to stop about every lap and a half to put my cap back on. I then tried to swim sans cap, but found it difficult to breathe with a mouth full of hair. :-( Any tips?

My hair isn't that long, but I had trouble with my cap coming off until I got a cap designed for long hair (Speedo Silicone Long Hair Cap). It stays on. I must just have a big head.

RE: HELP! Rinsing your hair in the shower before you put the cap on does help. Better yet, put your hair in a ponytail or a braid under the cap.

RE: HELP! Before getting in the pool, I wet my (curly, fine) hair in the shower, coat it with the Butter, then put my cap on. The chlorinated water never really gets to the hair. Andrea Lynch can’t exactly remember the last time she shampooed her hair. Maybe it was last summer? No, more like September. She thinks.

For most Americans, the idea of skipping shampoo for even a day is enough to make us feel a little itchy. But some hair stylists and dermatologists say going a few extra days between shampoos — or ditching the stuff entirely — could actually benefit your tresses.

It's a bit counterintuitive, but those who've tried it are quick to brag about the improved condition of their hair. "I'm thrilled with it; my hair's very shiny and it's just thick," says 34-year-old Lynch, who lives in South Vienna, Ohio.

“When you over-shampoo your hair, your hair is over-secreting oil in order to survive,” says Lorraine Massey, co-owner of Devachan Salon in New York and creator of the No Poo conditioning cleanser. (It's been more than 20 years since Massey's last shampoo.)

RE: HELP! As a teenage swimmer, the beauty shop people would always use my hair as an example of what chlorine did to blond hair. Since I started swimming again two years ago after a 25 year hiatus, I put conditioner in my hair before swimming and it kept it from getting real dry, but my cap would always slip off. One day, I was out of conditioner and had heard that olive oil made for a good hair conditioner (it is similar to natural hair oil). I have been using it ever since and now my hairdresser recommends it to others after seeing the good condition my hair is in now. The heat from the workout makes the oil penetrate my hair while I swim. After swim, I add shampoo and rub it in without extra water and then rinse it all out. :fish2:

RE: HELP! Double capping idea for really dry hair and it works.

i don't have a pre-treatment however a good weekly (cheap) chlorine removal treatment is to massage a 6 oz can of tomato paste into the length of your hair/roots. Wrap the whole mess in a plastic bag or saran wrap. Sit in a warm area for about 8 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and wash with shampoo. This makes hair soft, shiny, and takes the green swimmer look away....I'm not kidding!

Interesting. I had heard of tomato juice being a treatment for de-stinkifying after getting "skunked". I've also heard that it is the copper content in water that accounts for most of the greenish tint swimmer hair picks up.

Me - I gave up on Lady Clairol and keep my hair cut short. I have plenty of other battles to fight besides stressing about my hair.

RE: HELP! Bad news: I'm not sure they make it any more.

The product is Redken Sun Shape Swim Cream. I have a 5-ounce bottle here; the UPC code is 4387703890.

This stuff is great. In the summer we swim outdoors and the water temperature can get close to 90 degrees. When that happens I use a Lycra cap, which lets the water through. I can put this stuff on before I swim, do a 90-minute workout, and it's still in my hair afterward.

I haven't seen it at my salon recently and I don't see it on the Redken web site. I do see a bottle on Ebay, here:

I stumbled upon a product called "ReSami" in a swim magazine once. It's expensive -- $21 for 30 capsules -- but I have noticed a definite difference in my hair texture since using it. My daughter is an age group swimmer with very long hair, and her hair looks great; it's not dry and stays shiny. I buy mine here: www.salonweb.com/.../capsules.htm My hairdresser swears by a leave-in silicone based spray: www.sleekhair.com/8604.html I use this as well, and it's good, but I think ReSami is superior. Good luck!

*Edited to add that the silicon based products are supposed to protect the hair during your next swim, so they may help to protect your color.

RE: HELP!
