COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS - University of Michigan swimmer Tyler Clary won the NCAA title in the 400-yard individual medley Friday night in 3 minutes, 35.98 seconds.
It was the sophomore's first NCAA title, coming on the heels of Thursday's silver medal in the 200 IM.
The 400 time broke the NCAA record of 3:38.03 he set at the Big Ten meet on Feb. 27, the NCAA Championships record of 3:38.15 set by Olympic gold medalist Ryan Lochte of Florida in 2006 and the American and U.S. Open records of 3:36.26 set by Olympic legend Michael Phelps of Club Wolverine, also in 2006.
Clary was seeded first after a preliminary time of 3:38.16.
2 sec faster that Lochte in 2006, 0.3s faster that Phelps in 2006, 2 sec under the older NCAA record, from a sophomore ???
One Word : Wow

Next is he going to Rome ?
yes 400y IM is a different race that 400m LC IM bu if I'm not mistaken at the worlds there're 4 slot so he'll have a chance at the trials..

RE: Swims that make you go "wow!"

Patrick W. WOW! I keep re-checking the results to make sure my eyes aren't seeing things. Who is this guy?

RE: Swims that make you go "wow!"

WOW. we want her on our team!

RE: Swims that make you go "wow!"

Saw a 14 year boy, Jack Conger, swim a 49.92 in the 100 fly tonight. He broke the PV record (51.3) of Sean Fletcher, who just set the National High School record of 47.0 a few weeks ago. He is apparently after the NAG in the 200 back this weekend, held by Peirsol.

RE: Swims that make you go "wow!"

Actually Missy broke Lia Neal's 13-14 100 Free record of :49.47 which she swam at the 2008 SCY Nats in Atlanta last December. And still by quite alot!

Lia has the NAG 13-14 50 LCM record at :25.88 done at Jr Pan Pacs in Guam--looks like Missy may have that one also by this summer.

RE: Swims that make you go "wow!"

I just looked at the girls NAG records to see how Missy Franklin's 100 free compared.

The current 13-14 record is 49.53 by Amanda Weir

The current 15-16 record is 48.52 also by Weir.

She surpassed both and is still 13. Amazing.

RE: Swims that make you go "wow!"

Her teammate, 13 year old Clark Smith, progeny of John, also had a nice meet with a 48.7 100 free, ...

The next fastest girl was nearly two seconds back. Thirteen years old, are you kidding me?!!

She also swam a 22.71 to win the 50, and to show she's not a one-trick pony swam under 2:00 in the 200 IM (1:59.59)!

A little gossip for you...thats John (The Goodsmiths) Smiths sons girlfriend. He's 13 as well and just went 1:44 in the 200 free...think he's already 6'4" and most likely going to Texas!! :)

RE: Swims that make you go "wow!"

Patrick W. WOW, indeed. Now matter how excited I get about my times, all I need to do to bring me down a notch is to find some 12 or 13 year old girl who is kicking my butt! WOW, indeed.
