Even as a kid, I drove my poor parents crazy as I was always doing something instead of sleeping. (&quot;Remember the time that we woke up and found that Leonard had taken the kitchen sink apart to see how the plumbing worked?&quot;) Even today, when my wife takes a nap on weekend afternoons, she will ask me what I intend to do while she&#39;s asleep and can&#39;t stop me from whatever bad idea crosses my mind.

At night I can lay down and fall asleep instantly and then get up at 4:30-5 AM without an alarm clock. The stars are beautiful at that hour on cold nights.

I still like Fading Barnacle.

As for naps, on the very few occasions when I&#39;ve had the ability to nap right after a hard workout, it definitely was a decadent pleasure. That pretty much never happens though. I barely have time to swim or sleep in the first place, let alone do extra of either.

If I could nap, I probably would do it once or twice a week and target the 45 minute to 1 hour range.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Napping poll

I nap with varying durations. My eyes just don&#39;t want to stay open and my motivation and productivity plunge. Weekends, I will indulge and sleep for 4 hours, which totally screws up my ability to keep a normal schedule, compounding problems. It&#39;s most common when I am going short on sleep to make morning practices or even to get to work on time. Usually it hits either 1pm Saturdays or 3pm other days, about 2 hours after a meal.

My challenge is that I rarely find/make the time to do so.

I have that same ability. I will lay my head down and say to myself, Wake up in 20 minutes, and it&#39;s amazing how exact the awakening is.

I must say this poll has been very encouraging to me--I thought I was the only groggy person I knew!

Carlos, I will attempt your formula.

I sleep 8-9 hours, split the difference, 8.5.
Cut this in half: 4.25
Go to bed at midnight to 1, split the difference 12:30
Add the 4.25: 4:45
So my nap should ideally be, say, 4:30-5:00. This would give me a little time to wake up, get rid of the sleep inertia, and make it to swim practice perhaps turbocharged with a cup of coffee.

Naturally, I tend to nap a little earlier--maybe 3 or so. Maybe I should keep nap time the same, but try to go to bed a little earlier?

I find that it&#39;s hard to fall asleep at night with a TV on, but it&#39;s equally hard to fall asleep for a nap with the TV off. The best weekend nap inducing is golf, because the voices are soothing. The best weekday nap inducing fare is CNBC market coverage, because those guys do know how to drone on!

Final question: does your need to nap, for me it can feel like a sexual hunger to be seduced into sleep, hence the very nice recreational component, but anyhow, does your need to nap have anything to do with the amount of training you are doing?

It seems like I have been swimming a lot of yardage lately, avearging 3250 a day for 10 days straight, missing only MLK day. I have definitely felt more urge to nap lately, too.<div style="clear:both;"></div>

RE: Napping poll

I find that it&#39;s hard to fall asleep at night with a TV on, but it&#39;s equally hard to fall asleep for a nap with the TV off. I do this sometimes as well! :) It&#39;s the night owl approach to napping or prolonging your nighttime sleep.

I never nap. Naps are contra-indicated for insomniacs. And I don&#39;t have time during the day anyway. Very occasionally, on weekends, I will lay down and shut my eyes for 20-30 minutes and rest. I never fall asleep though. Occasionally I&#39;ll get the chance to, &quot;veg out,&quot; if not a formal nap after a long Sunday run. I typically run in the morning, have a big breakfast....then like to have a chance to just do nothing (watch some TV, read the paper, etc).

I nap every day and I love it: 15-30 minutes.

When I lived in Spain, I saw a news segment on the science of the siesta. Basically, the human body isn&#39;t designed to go 18 hours w/o resting, so a quick power nap refreshes the body. A 15 minute nap in the middle of the day = one full hour at night!!

However, they were explicit in stating that it should never be more than 60 minutes b/c that will screw up your internal clock.

Here&#39;s how it works: take the number of hours you sleep per night (say, 7), divide by 2 (3.5 hours). Add 3.5 hours to the time you go to bed (say 11pm + 3.5 hours = 2:30am). Then go 12 hours out from the mid-point of your sleep. At 2:30 pm, 15-20 min nap and you&#39;re soooo much more alert and productive the rest of the day.<div style="clear:both;"></div>
