I realize that the NCAA sets it's own rules, but I think this is contrary to the latest USAS intepretation of the two-suit rule.

"The restriction was not intended to apply to athletic supporters or modesty type wear. For purposes of the one swimsuit restriction, one (1) swimsuit may include the wearing of a single pair of “briefs” or “bikini bottoms” to ensure the modesty and privacy of swimmer."

There is a lot of confusion about this. I wish they'd be consistent.

RE: 2009 NCAA Swimming Championships

Spoke with a UT coach this morning

He said, at 2009 NCAAs there was a coaches meeting with officials, officials said, we know suit malfunctions happen and if a swimmer has one prior to a race just let us know & we'll stop the meet for up to 5 minutes to allow him to change into another suit.

In day 1 prelims, the 4 x 100 Medley was about to begin, UT's backstroker, Breastroker & flyer were behind the blocks, but not the freestyler, David Walters. Coaches wondered & worried about where he was. David walked out of the locker room in a Speedo brief. Ends up David's LZR shredded as he tried to put it on. He said I know I can do it, let me swim in this. Coaches said we need to go at least 3:08 to make finals, NO. Officials delayed the meet.

David got another LZR & started putting it on.

Someone said, "Wait, you have to remove your brief." (NCAA's one suit rule)

He wrapped a towel around his waist removed the brief & deck changed into the his LZR right before the race.

Coaches told officials when he gets the suit over his legs & hips you can start the race.

Here's a few Monday morning quarterback calls

Scott Spann redshirted
he had knee surgery that got staff infection so he was out for the season
scott was runner up last year in 200 *** & top 8 in 100
maybe if he was in top form, UT would have scored more points in 100 & 200 br and placed better in the medley relays

divers didn't score any points in 3 meter

ricky berens didn't final in 200 fly
heard his GF had a car accident on the way to the meet
his 200 fly was off

don't know if all the above would have over come 39 points

surprise of the meet was Jimmy Fiegen
2nd in 50 fr 18.8 & 100 free 41.4
maybe put jimmy on the 4 x 100 medley instead of walters
he improved from 19.4 & 43.49 last year

diver surprise was Livingstone win 1 meter & 2nd on 10 meter

outstanding 4 x 100 fr relay

wonder how NCAA's would have gone if teams could only have US citizens?

I hope Berens' GF is ok!

RE: 2009 NCAA Swimming Championships

I am a Cal Bear fan and the woman results were awesome and so were the men's. I was thinking about this same thing while watching the NCAA diving competitions.
I actually love watching diving of all levels. But it is such a completely different sport.
Sure there must be some good history that explains combining the two sports that we don't know about. Or like most things, a financial decision.

But I would like to see a pure swimming competition as well.

Have to say though, I think Dana Vollmer was happy there was a diving final before her last relay swim!

RE: 2009 NCAA Swimming Championships

wonder how NCAA's would have gone if teams could only have US citizens?

Have to say though, I think Dana Vollmer was happy there was a diving final before her last relay swim!

With USA Diving getting more involved with the NCAA, similar to how USA Swimming has partnered with the NCAA on ever-deeper levels, there's talk of adding synchronized diving at the NCAA level. There are two major issues that diving reps want to work out. First, is getting assistant coaches for diving teams with enough divers. The reasoning behind it is that teams like golf with 6-8 players on a team have a full-time assistant, so a diving squad with 6-8 divers of different gender really need an extra coach.

The synchro conversation is a part of the Olympic development process. One thing about adding synchro is that it would likely eliminate the two divers = one swimmer rule (or 3 divers = 1 swimmer in D2 and D3 if I remember right). Because, divers would then have the same amount of national meet opportunities to compete and add to the team total as swimmers.

RE: 2009 NCAA Swimming Championships

I know nobody cares about the distance events, but I'd like to point out UVA's Matt McLean's performance at NCAA's.
Dude all but dominated ACC's, and came into the NCAA meet seeded 4th in the 200, 1st in the 500 and 1st in the 1650.
Results:
500 free - best individual race, but just off his ACC time and 3rd place finish
200 free - 31st in prelims; relay split from 800 free relay would have landed him a 6th place in the individual event
1650 free - seeded first by 4 seconds and adds 15 seconds to his time to finish 12th

wonder what the deal was here...

RE: 2009 NCAA Swimming Championships

Did Auburn do better than expected or did UT do worse?

Probably a combo of the two. Texas swimmers went slower in many finals than they did in prelims and that hurt.

RE: 2009 NCAA Swimming Championships

Did Auburn do better than expected or did UT do worse?

RE: 2009 NCAA Swimming Championships

AUB did great, much stronger on bet they went in with the attitude

Not an insurmountable lead at all

Tomorrow

200 medley relay -

400 IM

100 Fly,

200 Free

100 ***

100 Back

3 meter diving

I predict a very tight race tomorrow.

Current Standings:

Texas 171
Auburn 141
Stanf 130
Florida 107
Cal 103

After the first 3 races tomorrow, if you just scored the psych sheet.

Auburn 238
Texas 215
Stanford 196
Florida 160
Cal 153

After the next three

Texas 290
Auburn 284
Stanford 252
Cal 239
Florida 196

And then there's still diving tomorrow night.

Then there is the 800 free relay which Texas should just own, but they choked last year.

But it would be

Texas 330
Auburn 310
Stanford 284

again, without diving.

But Texas needs every point, b/c the last day is auburn and Stanfords in a big way. The seeds has Texas scoring 108 that day, Auburn 139 and Stanford 157.

So that would be (without 3 meter on Friday or Platform on Saturday)

Auburn 449
