Got my mag, thank you, and read the Selby letter. He raises a legitimate issue. I've done dozens of open water swims in the past 20 years and some of them are poorly run. It's just not smart to to have a few hundred swimmers hitting 10-foot faces in Southern California or sub 55-degree water in the Bay Area, especially without an adequate rescue presence. Personally, I like rough conditions, cold water and don't want to wear a wetsuit. But if it's much under 60 degrees, I know I'll start to slide into hypothermia, so I stay out. Too many swimmers seem to believe that it's a matter of toughness. It's not. Wetsuits should either be mandatory below a certain temperature - I vote for 60 - or there needs to be a lot of rescuers monitoring the race with the authority to pull out those who get in trouble whether they like it or not.

I don't understand it when people come on here saying they haven't received their copy when it isn't even the month of publication yet. I don't understand when people complain about it anyhow... 9/10 if its late its down to USPS...they're the real enemy! :D

Got my copy in the mail yesterday. That's January 2 - the first day of mail delivery in January. Since it's the January/February issue, I say well done USMS. You got it in my mailbox right on the target date. I don't understand it when people come on here saying they haven't received their copy when it isn't even the month of publication yet.

I don't understand when people complain about it anyhow... 9/10 if its late its down to USPS...they're the real enemy! :D Mine arrived today. A week after this thread was started. So is it late? And if so, who is to blame? USMS or USPS? The weather? The alignment of the stars? A cosmic shift? :bolt:

OK, I actually haven't gotten my copy yet. Anyone else in the same boat? Haven't gotten mine yet either. Usually I get it pretty early in the cycle. Perhaps my mailman put it in the wrong box, it wouldn't be the first time.

The first part of your statement is way more than true. Don't think the author realizes that everday we do something, there is a fair amount of risk involved. Especially if it's nekked! :bed:

just about any day of the week... any time of day.... one can find up to a dozen swimmers at aquatic park. many nekked. it just goes to show that training in such conditions will prepare one to swim in such conditions. trying to make any activity totally risk free for everyone can only diminish the experience. speaking of the jan-feb issue; i think the letter by bart selby is so off the mark..... "wetsuits mandatory in water below 66 degrees"........ put a sweater on buddy and stick to terra firma. I haven't read this letter yet so I'm not sure what the context is, but 66 degrees is not when I've seen wetsuits become mandatory for an event. Coeur d'Alene Lake was quite cold (high 40's) a few weeks before Ironman Coeur d'Alene last summer, so the race organizers announced that wetsuits would be mandatory if the lake temp was below 60 on race day. The lake temp shot up in the last few days before the race, all the way to 59 degrees on race morning so we all swam in wetsuits.

I agree with your thinking on this one. I was swimming in San Fran bay, when it was about 60-61 degrees. It felt great!
